What does retrograde mean in astrology?

A planet is retrograde when, seen from Earth, it appears to move backwards through the zodiac, from a higher degree to a lower one, for a stretch of days or months, before turning direct again. Nothing in space reverses. Every planet orbits the Sun in the same direction; retrograde is a matter of perspective, like the car in the next lane seeming to slide backwards as you pass it. For the outer planets (Mars to Pluto) it happens when Earth overtakes them on the inside track; for Mercury and Venus it happens when they overtake us on theirs. In the sky. Any ephemeris or cosmic calendar marks retrograde periods with an Rx or ℞ symbol next to the planet. In your birth chart. Look for the ℞ mark beside a planet on the free birth chart. Retrograde by planet

Retrograde dates 2026 and early 2027

Two retrogrades matter most for dating. Venus retrograde is the season of the returning ex, the re-examined relationship and the sudden question "what do I actually want?" Traditional advice is to avoid starting relationships, weddings and major purchases during it, not because they are doomed but because your judgement of value is under revision; the better use is to audit what you have.
