North Node in astrology: your life direction, by sign (and the South Node)
If the Sun is who you are and the Moon is what you need, the North Node is where you are going. It turns a chart from a portrait into a direction, and always comes paired with the South Node, the habits you are meant to grow beyond. Here is what the nodes are, how to find them, what each sign means, and how they behave when two charts meet.
The North Node in astrology is the point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic heading north. It is not a planet but a calculated point, always exactly opposite the South Node. In a birth chart the North Node shows the direction of growth and purpose, while the South Node shows ingrained habits and inherited gifts.
What is the North Node in astrology?
The lunar nodes are the two points where the Moon's orbit, which is tilted about 5° to the Earth's orbit, crosses the ecliptic. Where the Moon crosses heading north is the North Node (☊), also called the ascending node, the Dragon's Head, or Rahu in Vedic astrology. Where it crosses heading south is the South Node (☋), the descending node, Dragon's Tail or Ketu. They are always exactly 180° apart, so knowing one gives you the other. Eclipses happen when a new or full Moon falls close to the nodes, which is why the ancients drew them as a dragon swallowing the Sun.
The nodes move backwards through the zodiac, about 19° a year, taking roughly 18.6 years to complete a circuit and about a year and a half per sign. Everyone born within that eighteen-month window shares a nodal axis, so the sign is generational; the house and the aspects are personal.
Interpretively, the North Node is the direction of growth. It is not a talent you already have; it is the unfamiliar quality your life keeps steering you toward, often uncomfortably. The South Node is the opposite: skills and habits that come so easily they become a rut, and, in schools that use past lives, the residue of who you have already been. Neither is good or bad. The best readings treat the axis as a single sentence: from the South Node's default toward the North Node's stretch, without ever abandoning the South Node's gifts.
How to find the North Node in your chart

Your birth date fixes the sign; the house needs your birth time. Look for the horseshoe glyph (☊) for the North Node; the South Node is the same glyph upside down, exactly opposite.
Two settings matter. Mean Node averages the wobble of the Moon's orbit into a steady backward drift; True Node follows the real position, which can briefly move forward. They are usually within a degree or two of each other, and occasionally a different sign near a boundary. Either is acceptable; note which one your chart uses if you compare with a friend's.
Where the nodes are now. The North Node has been in Pisces (South Node in Virgo) since January 2025 and stays there until late July 2026, when it moves into Aquarius with the South Node in Leo until early 2028. Anyone with a Pisces or Virgo North Node is in a nodal return or reversal right now; the Aquarius-Leo nodal generation (people born about 18.6 years apart, most recently around 2008 to 2009) is next. Nodal returns. The nodes return to their natal position at about 18 to 19, 37 and 55 to 56. These ages tend to bring decisions about direction, and the halfway points (about 9, 27 to 28 and 46) bring a reversal, when the South Node crosses your natal North Node and old habits get tested.

A partner's Sun, Moon or Venus conjunct your North Node feels like someone who pulls you forward; these relationships stretch you and rarely feel casual. A partner's planets on your South Node feel instantly familiar, as if you already know them, which is wonderful for comfort and risky for growth, because the relationship can settle into old patterns fast. This is the mechanism behind the pattern of familiar, unavailable partners: the South Node keeps choosing what it knows.
