Should I text him? What astrology can and cannot tell you

Let us settle the big question first, because “should I text him astrology” is what most people type before they get here. Astrology cannot tell you whether someone likes you. It can tell you when a message is likely to be read in the mood you meant it, when it is likely to be misread, and when it will probably sit unanswered for reasons that have nothing to do with you. Retrograde rules for texting: keep messages short and literal (no jokes that depend on tone, no “we should talk”), confirm plans the morning of, and do not read silence as a verdict. It is also the classic season for mercury retrograde texting an ex: old names reappear because Mercury retrograde reopens old threads. Replying is fine. Starting a reconciliation by text before the retrograde ends is the thing to skip, and if you must, wait until the Moon is direct and clear (see Rules 3 to 5) and say something you would be comfortable having quoted back to you in December.

Rule 2: Venus retrograde

Venus rules affection, and a Venus retrograde (every eighteen months, about six weeks) turns attention toward past relationships and second thoughts. Rule 3: The Moon's phase sets the week

The Moon moves through a full cycle in about 29.5 days, and each phase favors a different kind of message.

• New Moon (and the two days after): the opening. The best time for a first message, a re-introduction, or asking someone out. Energy is low-key and forward-looking; keep it simple.
• Waxing Moon (from the crescent to just before Full): building. Follow-ups, flirting, escalating from chat to a plan. Momentum is on your side; this is the widest good window each month.
• Full Moon (and a day either side): peak feeling. Wonderful for a heartfelt message you have already decided to send; risky for confrontations, ultimatums and anything you type at midnight. People overshare and over-read under a Full Moon, including you.
• Waning Moon (Full to the last quarter): clarifying. Good for clearing up a misunderstanding, saying what you actually meant, or closing a loop gracefully.

Rule 4: The Moon's sign sets the day

The Moon changes sign roughly every two and a half days, and the sign colors the collective mood: what people are in the mood to talk about, how fast they reply, how they read tone. The table below is the cheat sheet; the short version is that air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are the sociable days, earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are for plans and logistics, and water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are for depth, with a higher risk of misreading.

Match the Moon sign to the message. A first message lands best under a Libra, Gemini or Leo Moon. A “can we talk?” belongs under a Scorpio or Cancer Moon, when people want the real conversation, and never under a Full Moon in either. Logistics (“Saturday, 7, that place with the patio?”) go under Virgo or Capricorn. Rule 5: Never send it Void-of-Course

The Moon is Void-of-Course between its last major aspect in one sign and its entry into the next. It can last minutes or most of a day, and it happens every two or three days. Traditional astrology's verdict on anything begun during a Void Moon is blunt: nothing will come of it. For texting, that translates as messages that get lost, read late, misunderstood, or answered with a thumbs-up and nothing else. Rule 6: Day rulers and the hour of day

Each day of the week has a planetary ruler, a tradition older than the zodiac columns: Monday is the Moon (moods, check-ins, comfort), Tuesday is Mars (directness, initiative, a slight edge), Wednesday is Mercury (conversation, wit, plans), Thursday is Jupiter (generosity, invitations, big plans), Friday is Venus (affection, flirting, dates), Saturday is Saturn (seriousness, boundaries, the difficult conversation) and Sunday is the Sun (warmth, honesty, being seen). For romance, Wednesday and Friday are the classic days; a date proposed on a Thursday for a Friday has both Jupiter and Venus behind it.

Hour of day is mostly common sense that astrology agrees with. Mid-morning to early evening is when messages are read in a clear mood. Good timing deserves a good message. The principles: one idea per text, a question they can answer in a sentence, no pressure, no audit of their silence.

• First message after a match (New Moon, air or fire sign): “Your photo from the trail: where is that? I need a new Sunday walk.”
• After a first date (waxing Moon, Venus or Mercury day): “I had a really good time. Would you want to do the patio place next week?”
• Re-opening after a quiet stretch (waxing Moon, not void): “Saw this and thought of you [link]. How has your week been?”
• During Mercury retrograde (any day, short and literal): “Still on for Saturday at 7? I'll be the one by the window.”
• To an ex, only after November 13 and only if you mean it: “I've been thinking about how things ended, and I'd like to talk properly sometime if you're open to it. No pressure either way.”

Notice that none of these say “hey” on its own, none ask why they have not replied, and all of them can be answered without a paragraph.

What to do if they don't reply

First, check the sky before you check yourself. Was the Moon void when you sent it? Is Mercury retrograde? Did you send it into a Full Moon in Scorpio at 1 a.m.? Any of those explains a silence without it meaning anything about you. Second, wait one Moon-sign change, about two and a half days, before doing anything; most replies arrive within it. Third, if you follow up, do it once, under a waxing Moon on a Venus or Mercury day, with something new rather than a repeat (“no worries if you're swamped, but that patio offer stands”). Then stop. Astrology can explain a delay; it cannot turn a no into a yes, and the most dignified reading of a second silence is the plain one.
