What is my astrology sign?

When people ask "what is my astrology sign", they almost always mean the Sun sign: the zodiac sign the Sun was moving through on the day you were born. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which divides the Sun's yearly path into twelve equal 30-degree slices starting at the spring equinox. Aries begins the moment the Sun crosses the equinox point; Taurus begins 30 degrees later; and so on around the wheel until Pisces closes the year.

Because every slice is exactly 30 degrees and the Sun moves roughly one degree a day, each sign lasts about a month. That is why a birthday is usually enough to know your sign. The exceptions are people born on a boundary day, where the exact hour matters, and we cover that below.

Why zodiac sign dates shift by a day some years

The Sun does not change signs at midnight on a fixed calendar date. It changes signs at a precise astronomical moment, the ingress, and that moment drifts. A tropical year is about 365.24 days, so each ingress happens roughly six hours later than the previous year, then jumps back almost a full day after a leap year. Add time zones and the same ingress can fall on September 22 in Los Angeles and September 23 in London.

That is the whole reason different websites disagree about whether Libra starts on the 22nd or the 23rd. Both are right for some years. The table above uses the most common boundary for recent decades; if your birthday is on or within a day of a boundary, the only reliable answer comes from a chart cast for your exact time and place. Born on a cusp? Here is the honest answer

A cusp in popular astrology means a birthday within a few days of a sign boundary, and the internet has given each one a name: the Virgo–Libra "cusp of beauty", the Leo–Virgo "cusp of exposure", the Scorpio–Sagittarius "cusp of revolution". They make fun reading, but astronomically the Sun is always in exactly one sign. Nobody is 60 percent Virgo and 40 percent Libra; you are one or the other, and your birth time decides which.

What is real: people born near a boundary often have Mercury or Venus in the neighbouring sign, because those planets never travel far from the Sun. That is where the "blend" feeling comes from. Zodiac signs by month: which sign is each month?

Most months contain two signs, which is why "January zodiac sign" has two answers. The split falls around the 19th to the 23rd of every month.

January zodiac sign

January 1 to 19 is Capricorn; January 20 to 31 is Aquarius. Capricorn Januarys are the planners and builders of the calendar; late-January Aquarians are the ones already questioning the plan.

Is there a 13th zodiac sign (Ophiuchus)?

Every few years a headline announces that NASA "added" a 13th sign and everyone's sign has changed. Here is what actually happened. There are 13 constellations that touch the Sun's path, and Ophiuchus is one of them. But the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology is not made of constellations at all; it is made of twelve equal 30-degree divisions of the seasons, anchored to the equinoxes and solstices. Constellations are irregular in size, and the Earth's slow wobble (precession) has shifted them roughly 24 degrees away from the tropical signs over the last two thousand years. Astrologers have known this since Ptolemy.

So no, your sign did not change, and Ophiuchus is not a sign in the tropical system. If you are curious about the constellation-based approach, sidereal astrology (used in Vedic astrology) measures against the stars and will often give you a different Sun sign, but it still uses twelve signs.

Your Sun sign is the beginning, not the whole story

Sun-sign horoscopes describe one twelfth of the population at a time, which is why they can feel either uncannily right or completely off. Your birth chart contains ten planets, twelve houses and a rising sign, all placed by your exact birth time and location. Two people born on the same date can have wildly different charts: one with the Moon in Cancer and Scorpio rising, another with the Moon in Aquarius and Leo rising.

Elements and modalities: what the dates already tell you

The order of the signs is not random. Reading around the wheel, the elements repeat Fire, Earth, Air, Water three times, and the modalities repeat Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable four times. That gives every sign a two-word signature you can read straight off the date table. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) open each season and tend to initiate. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) sit in the middle of a season and tend to sustain; we explain them in depth on the fixed signs page. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) close a season and tend to adapt. A late-September Libra, for example, is Cardinal Air: an initiator who works through people and ideas.

A worked example: September 14 versus September 23

Take two birthdays three weeks apart. Someone born on September 14 has the Sun at roughly 21 degrees of Virgo, deep in the third decan, with no boundary anywhere near; their sign is settled no matter the birth time or time zone. Someone born on September 23, 2022, in Denver was born about nineteen hours after the Sun entered Libra (01:04 UTC that day), so they are a Libra in every time zone. Someone born on September 22, 2026, in Denver at 6 p.m. is Libra, because the Sun entered Libra at 00:05 UTC on September 23, which was 6:05 p.m. Mountain time on the 22nd. Same calendar date, opposite answers depending on the hour. That is why the lookup above asks for a time when you are near a boundary.

Sun sign, Chinese zodiac and life path: three different systems

A birthday also places you in the Chinese zodiac, which runs on years rather than months (2026 is the Year of the Horse), and gives you a life path number in numerology, computed by reducing your full birth date. All three systems use the same date but answer different questions: the Sun sign describes your core drive and identity, the Chinese animal describes the year's collective character, and the life path describes the arc your choices tend to follow.
