What Archetype Am I? The free cosmic archetype quiz

This archetype quiz does not ask whether you prefer coffee or tea. It takes your birth date (and birth time if you have it), works out your Sun sign, Moon sign, rising sign and life path number, and tells you which of seven cosmic archetypes that combination forms, from the Precise Alchemist to the Rebel, with strengths, shadow and what you need in a partner.

AstraLink cosmic archetype card: The Precise Alchemist, from Sun Virgo, Moon Pisces, Scorpio rising and life path 5
Quick answer

Your archetype is the pattern your chart forms when Sun, Moon, rising sign and life path number are read together. AstraLink's archetype quiz maps that combination to one of seven cosmic archetypes: Alchemist, Guardian, Explorer, Oracle, Sovereign, Healer or Rebel. Enter your birth date above; a birth time makes the result exact.

Take the archetype quiz

Computed in your browser from your birth date; add a birth time and place for the rising sign and an exact result. The AstraLink app reads the full chart and writes your archetype's strengths, shadow, relationships and career.

How the archetype quiz works

  1. Enter your birth date, and time and place if you know them. The date fixes your Sun sign and life path number and estimates your Moon sign. The time and place fix your rising sign, which is needed for an exact archetype; without it, the quiz gives the most likely result and says how confident it is.
  2. The quiz computes your Big Three and life path. Sun (identity), Moon (emotional needs), rising sign (approach and appearance), and the life path number from your full birth date, reduced to one digit or a master number.
  3. It weighs elements, modalities and rulers. Fire, earth, air and water; cardinal, fixed and mutable; the planets ruling your Sun and rising sign. That profile maps to one of seven cosmic archetypes.
  4. You get your archetype, with its two faces. Every archetype has a receptive (feminine) and an assertive (masculine) expression; the result shows which you lead with. It also names the shadow side and the partner energy that balances you.
  5. Read the full version in the app. The app names the specific archetype, such as The Precise Alchemist, and writes the reading for your exact placements: talents, karmic lesson, love, career, money approach.

What archetype am I? Jung's twelve, and the seven we use

Carl Jung proposed that certain patterns, which he called archetypes, recur in every culture's myths and in every person's psyche: the Mother, the Hero, the Trickster, the Wise Old Man, the Shadow. Later writers, notably Carol Pearson and Margaret Mark, condensed them into the twelve archetypes most quizzes use: the Innocent, the Everyperson, the Hero, the Caregiver, the Explorer, the Rebel, the Lover, the Creator, the Jester, the Sage, the Magician and the Ruler. A typical archetype test asks twenty questions and sorts you into one of them.

AstraLink's quiz is built on astrology instead of questionnaires, so we use a set that maps cleanly onto a birth chart: seven cosmic archetypes, each a blend of the Jungian figures with the elements, modalities and planets that produce them.

  • The Alchemist (Jung's Magician plus the Sage): transforms raw material, feelings, data, mess, into something refined. Earth and water, mutable, Mercury and Pluto. The Precise Alchemist is its Virgo-Sun, Pisces-Moon, Scorpio-rising form; read its page.
  • The Guardian (Caregiver plus Ruler): protects, provides, builds walls that keep people safe. Earth and water, fixed and cardinal, Saturn and the Moon.
  • The Explorer (Explorer plus Jester): needs the horizon, learns by leaving, laughs on the way. Fire and air, mutable, Jupiter and Mercury.
  • The Oracle (Sage plus Innocent): sees patterns before they are visible, trusts intuition, needs quiet to hear it. Water and air, Neptune and Uranus.
  • The Sovereign (Ruler plus Hero): leads, decides, takes responsibility and the spotlight. Fire and earth, cardinal and fixed, the Sun and Mars.
  • The Healer (Caregiver plus Lover): mends what is broken in people and places; feels others' pain as information. Water and earth, Chiron, Venus and the Moon.
  • The Rebel (Rebel plus Creator): breaks the rule to make a better one; allergic to being managed. Air and fire, fixed, Uranus and Mars.

The archetypes guide shows how each maps to elements and modalities and which archetypes pair well in relationships.

How the quiz computes your archetype from your chart

Four inputs, one result.

Your Sun sign carries the most weight: it is the core identity, the element and modality you build with. Your Moon sign is next: emotional needs, what you reach for under stress, which often pulls the archetype in a different direction from the Sun (a Leo Sun with a Cancer Moon is a Sovereign with a Guardian's heart). Your rising sign is the approach: how you enter rooms, what people see first, and, through its ruling planet, the chart ruler that colours everything. Your life path number, from numerology, adds the life's direction: 1 pushes toward the Sovereign, 2 toward the Healer, 5 toward the Explorer or Alchemist, 7 toward the Oracle, 8 toward the Guardian, 9 toward the Healer or Rebel.

The quiz scores each of the seven archetypes against that profile and returns the strongest, along with the runner-up, because most people are a blend. In the app, the archetype gets a specific name, such as The Precise Alchemist or The Sovereign Explorer, because the full chart adds the chart ruler, the dispositor centre and the strongest aspects, and the AI reading is written for those exact placements. Read the Big Three guide for what Sun, Moon and rising each contribute, and the rising sign guide for why birth time matters so much.

Female archetype quiz, feminine archetypes, and why we do not sort by gender

A large share of people searching for an archetype test are looking for a female archetype quiz: the Maiden, Mother and Crone of older traditions, or the Queen, Huntress, Lover, Sage and Mystic of modern feminine-archetype work. Those systems are beautiful, and they describe energies, not bodies. Astrology has always framed it the same way: receptive (yin, traditionally called feminine) and assertive (yang, traditionally called masculine) qualities that every chart contains in different proportions. Water and earth signs are receptive; fire and air signs are assertive; everyone has all four elements somewhere.

So the quiz does not ask your gender and does not need it. Instead, every cosmic archetype has two faces. The Guardian's receptive face is the Mother or Nurturer; its assertive face is the Protector. The Sovereign's receptive face is the Queen who holds court; its assertive face is the King who leads a charge. The Oracle's receptive face is the Mystic; its assertive face is the Visionary. Your result tells you which face you lead with, and how the other shows up. If you came here for a feminine archetypes quiz, you will find the Maiden in the Explorer and Oracle, the Mother in the Guardian and Healer, the Queen in the Sovereign, the Huntress in the Rebel and the Wise Woman in the Alchemist and Oracle. If you came here as a man, a non-binary person, or anyone at all, the quiz reads exactly the same. AstraLink is built for everyone, and so is the chart.

Spiritual archetype quiz: what your archetype is for

An archetype is not a label; it is a job description for your growth. The Alchemist's work is turning pain into precision. The Guardian's is learning that protection is not control. The Explorer's is finding a horizon that does not require leaving everyone. The Oracle's is trusting what it sees. The Sovereign's is leading without needing to be obeyed. The Healer's is healing without bleeding. The Rebel's is building the thing after breaking the old one. That is why the app pairs your archetype with your karmic lesson and life themes in the full reading: the archetype is the character, the chart is the plot.

It is also why archetypes matter in dating. Some pairs amplify each other (Sovereign and Healer, Alchemist and Oracle); some need negotiation (Guardian and Explorer); some are fireworks (Rebel and Sovereign). AstraLink's compatibility reading and Cosmic Dating use the whole chart, with the archetype as the headline, so you see both the spark and the work before you message anyone. Free archetype test, no strings

The quiz above is free, runs in your browser and asks for no email. Its limit is the rising sign: without a birth time it estimates, which is why the result shows a confidence level. Your birth certificate, hospital record or a parent usually has the time; with it, the free birth chart calculator gives you the exact Big Three, and the quiz becomes exact too. Archetype quiz questions

What archetype am I?

Your archetype is the pattern formed by your Sun sign, Moon sign, rising sign and life path number read together. AstraLink's quiz maps that combination to one of seven cosmic archetypes: Alchemist, Guardian, Explorer, Oracle, Sovereign, Healer or Rebel. Enter your birth date in the quiz above; adding your birth time makes the result exact.

Is the archetype quiz free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs only your birth date (birth time optional but recommended) and asks for no email. The AstraLink app extends it into a full reading with a specific archetype name, strengths, shadow, relationships and career, free for early-access members at launch.

What are the 12 archetypes?

The twelve Jungian archetypes popularised by Carol Pearson and Margaret Mark are the Innocent, Everyperson, Hero, Caregiver, Explorer, Rebel, Lover, Creator, Jester, Sage, Magician and Ruler. AstraLink condenses them into seven cosmic archetypes that map onto astrological elements, modalities and planets, so a birth chart can compute them.

Is there a female archetype quiz?

This quiz serves that search without sorting by gender. Each cosmic archetype has a receptive (feminine) and an assertive (masculine) face, and your result shows which you lead with. The classic feminine archetypes map in: Maiden to Explorer and Oracle, Mother to Guardian and Healer, Queen to Sovereign, Huntress to Rebel, Wise Woman to Alchemist and Oracle.

How accurate is an archetype test based on astrology?

It is exact as a computation and interpretive as a description. Given a birth date, time and place, the Sun, Moon, rising sign and life path are fixed facts, and the archetype mapping is deterministic. Whether the description fits is for you to judge; astrology is a reflective language, and most people find the archetype plus its shadow recognisable.

Can my archetype change?

Your natal archetype does not change, because it is computed from your birth chart. What changes is which face you express and how well you handle the shadow, which transits such as the Saturn return tend to push. The app's Cosmic Simulator shows which parts of your archetype are being activated by the current sky.

What is the difference between my archetype and my zodiac sign?

Your zodiac (Sun) sign is one input. The archetype combines it with your Moon sign, rising sign and life path number, so two Virgos can be different archetypes: a Virgo with a Pisces Moon and Scorpio rising is a Precise Alchemist, while a Virgo with a Capricorn Moon and Taurus rising is a Guardian.
