What is Chiron in astrology?

Chiron is a small icy body, roughly 200 km across, that orbits the Sun between Saturn and Uranus on a lopsided path of about 50 years. Astronomers catalogue it twice, as minor planet 2060 Chiron and as comet 95P/Chiron, because it behaves like both. Charles Kowal spotted it on 1 November 1977, and astrologers adopted it within a decade. Its glyph looks like a key, which is how most people end up describing it.

The name comes from Greek myth. Chiron was a centaur, but unlike the rowdy others he was a scholar and physician who taught Achilles, Jason and Asclepius. Wounded by a poisoned arrow he could not cure, and immortal so he could not die, he eventually traded his immortality to free Prometheus. That story is the whole interpretation in miniature: Chiron in a birth chart marks the wound that does not fully close, and the healing skill that grows precisely there. Its position between Saturn (limits, the known world) and Uranus (the breakthrough) is often read as the bridge between the two: the place where your limitation becomes your unusual gift.

How to find Chiron in your chart

Chiron is included in most modern chart calculators, including the free birth chart on this site and the full AI reading in the app, which lists it alongside the nodes and Lilith. Look for the key-shaped glyph (⚷) on the wheel. You need your birth date; the sign will be correct without a birth time, but the house depends on the time and place, so check your certificate if the house reading is going to matter to you.

Once you have it, note three things: the sign, the house, and any aspect within 3° to your Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars or an angle. Chiron conjunct the Ascendant or Moon is usually felt daily; Chiron unaspected in the 12th can go quiet for years and then arrive all at once at the Chiron return. Retrograde Chiron, common because Chiron spends around five months of every year in retrograde, tends to process the wound privately before it can help anyone else with it.

Chiron in Aries, 2018 to 2027. Chiron entered Aries briefly in April 2018 and for good in February 2019. It first enters Taurus in mid-2027, retrogrades back into Aries for a final pass later that year, and settles into Taurus in 2028.
