What is the Chinese zodiac?

The Chinese zodiac (shengxiao, "birth likeness") is a twelve-year cycle in which each year is named for an animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig, in that order. Layered on top is a ten-year cycle of five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), each appearing in a yang and a yin year, so that any animal-plus-element combination, such as the Fire Horse, comes round only once every sixty years. The twelve animals are in fact the Earthly Branches of the traditional Chinese calendar, and the elements come from the Heavenly Stems; the animals are the memorable face of a much older counting system.

The order itself comes from a folk tale, the Great Race: the Jade Emperor invited the animals to a river crossing, and the clever Rat rode across on the patient Ox's back and jumped off first, which is why the Rat leads the cycle and the Ox comes second, with the Pig, who stopped to eat and sleep, arriving last. The story is a memory aid, but it doubles as a first character sketch of each animal.

Unlike Western astrology, which is built on the Sun's position in the month you were born, the Chinese zodiac's headline sign comes from your year. Popular culture stops there. The fuller system, BaZi or the Four Pillars of Destiny, also assigns an animal and element to your birth month, day and hour, and it is the day pillar, not the year, that a Chinese astrologer would call your real self.

How to find your Chinese zodiac animal

Find your birth year in the table above, with one important exception. The Chinese year begins at Chinese New Year, which falls on a different date each year, anywhere between January 21 and February 20. If you were born in January or the first three weeks of February, you may belong to the previous animal. Recent examples: Chinese New Year fell on February 10 in 2024, January 29 in 2025 and February 17 in 2026, so a baby born on February 10, 2026 is a Wood Snake, not a Fire Horse, and the Horse year runs from February 17, 2026 to February 5, 2027.

A second wrinkle: BaZi practitioners start the year not at the lunar new year but at Lichun, the solar term around February 3–5 that marks the start of spring. For most people the two dates give the same animal; for a birthday in the first days of February, they can differ. If that is you, the BaZi calculator uses the solar year and shows all four pillars.

The five elements

Each year also carries one of the five elements (wuxing), which modifies the animal the way a Moon sign modifies a Sun sign in Western astrology:

• Wood (years ending in 4 or 5): growth, idealism, flexibility, cooperation. A Wood Horse (2014) is the most collaborative Horse.
• Fire (years ending in 6 or 7): passion, drama, leadership, impatience. Fire amplifies whatever the animal already is, which is why the Fire Horse has a reputation.
• Earth (years ending in 8 or 9): stability, patience, practicality, stubbornness. Earth grounds restless animals.
• Metal (years ending in 0 or 1): determination, rigour, ambition, rigidity. The 1990 Metal Horse is the most single-minded Horse.
• Water (years ending in 2 or 3): intuition, communication, adaptability, drift. Water softens and connects.

The elements also relate to each other: Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, Water feeds Wood (the productive cycle), while Wood breaks Earth, Earth absorbs Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood (the controlling cycle). These cycles are what a BaZi reading uses to judge balance in a chart and the tone of a year.

2026: the Year of the Fire Horse

2026 is a Bing Wu year, the Fire Horse, running from February 17, 2026 to February 5, 2027. Fire is the Horse's own natural element, so this is the Horse at full volume: fast, warm, sociable, independent, allergic to being fenced in. The last Fire Horse year was 1966, and it carries a famous piece of folklore: in Japan, a superstition held that women born in a hinoeuma (Fire Horse) year would be headstrong and bring misfortune to a husband, and Japan's birth rate dropped sharply in 1966 as families avoided the year. Modern readers treat it as a historical curiosity rather than a warning, and the 2026 Fire Horse is more often described as a year of momentum, movement and bold decisions.

Traditionally, a Fire Horse year rewards people who act on plans they have been sitting on, favours travel, launches and visible work, and punishes over-commitment and burning out; the pace is the challenge. People born in Horse years are in their own year (their ben ming nian), which tradition treats as a year of testing, more on that on the Year of the Horse page. Rat-born people, the Horse's opposite, are said to feel the friction most. The Goat year that follows in 2027 is expected to be gentler.

Chinese zodiac compatibility: trines, secret friends and clashes

Compatibility in the Chinese zodiac follows the geometry of the twelve-animal wheel:

• The four trines (animals 120 degrees apart, who share a temperament): Rat–Dragon–Monkey (the doers), Ox–Snake–Rooster (the thinkers), Tiger–Horse–Dog (the protectors), Rabbit–Goat–Pig (the peacemakers). Members of a trine are the classic best matches in love and business.
• The six secret friends (liuhe, six harmonies): Rat–Ox, Tiger–Pig, Rabbit–Dog, Dragon–Rooster, Snake–Monkey, Horse–Goat. Quieter than trines, often the most durable pairings.
• The six clashes (opposites on the wheel): Rat–Horse, Ox–Goat, Tiger–Monkey, Rabbit–Rooster, Dragon–Dog, Snake–Pig. Not impossible, but the friction is built in and needs conscious handling.

Chinese zodiac vs Western astrology

The two systems answer different questions and coexist comfortably; many people know both their animal and their Sun sign.

• Time unit. Western astrology's headline sign is the Sun's sign for the month of birth; the Chinese zodiac's is the year. Western astrology then adds the exact day, hour and place for the full chart; BaZi adds month, day and hour pillars.
• Calendar. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the seasons. The Chinese zodiac uses the lunisolar calendar (new year at the second new moon after the winter solstice) or, in BaZi, the solar terms.
• Elements. Western astrology has four elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water); Chinese metaphysics has five (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and no Air, with elements that generate and control one another.
• Method. A Western chart is a snapshot of planetary positions; a BaZi chart is a set of eight characters (four stem–branch pairs) read for balance and timing. Vedic astrology, a third system, uses the sidereal zodiac; see Vedic vs Western astrology for that comparison.
• Rough correspondences. People often map the animals to signs by month: the Horse month is roughly June, aligning with Gemini and Cancer; the Rat month is roughly December. These are analogies, not equivalences.
