Cazimi in astrology: when a planet sits in the heart of the Sun

What is a cazimi in astrology?

A planet is cazimi when it is conjunct the Sun so exactly that it sits in the Sun's centre: within 17 arcminutes (17', a little more than a quarter of a degree) by the traditional rule, or within 1° by the looser modern one. The word is a Latin rendering of the Arabic kaṣmīmī, "as if in the heart", and medieval astrologers wrote it as in corde solis, in the heart of the Sun.

It matters because of what happens on either side of it. A planet within roughly 15° of the Sun is under the beams, dimmed by the glare; within about 8.5° it is combust, traditionally the weakest condition a planet can be in, burned up and unable to be seen. But at the very centre, the rule flips. A cazimi planet is said to sit "on the king's throne", protected and amplified rather than burned. Medieval authors such as Bonatti treated cazimi as a mark of great strength; modern astrologers read it as a window of clarity, when the planet's function is briefly free of noise.

In practice a cazimi lasts only hours. The Sun moves about 1° a day and the planet is moving too, so a 17' window on either side of exact passes in roughly six to twelve hours for Mercury. That brevity is the point: it is a moment, not a season.

How to find a cazimi (and when they happen)

Cazimis are events in the sky, so you find them in an ephemeris or a calendar rather than in your birth chart, though you can be born with one: a natal cazimi (Sun and Mercury, say, within 17') gives that planet an unusual clarity and single-mindedness. For the transiting kind, the rhythm is fixed by orbits:

• Mercury is cazimi about six times a year: once in the middle of each retrograde (the inferior conjunction, Mercury between Earth and Sun) and once between retrogrades (the superior conjunction, Mercury on the far side). Common misconceptions about cazimi

• "Cazimi and combust are the same." They are opposites. Combust (within about 8.5°) weakens; cazimi (within 17') strengthens.

• "Cazimi cancels Mercury retrograde." It is a clear window inside the retrograde, not the end of it. Mercury is still retrograde before and after.
