What is numerology?

Numerology is the practice of reading numbers as symbols of character and timing. The Western system most people use is called Pythagorean numerology, after the Greek philosopher who taught that number is the underlying pattern of reality; the modern form was organised in the early twentieth century, largely by the American teacher L. Dow Balliett and her student Julia Seton. It assigns a personality to each digit from 1 to 9, treats 11, 22 and 33 as "master numbers" with amplified meaning, and derives a small set of core numbers from two inputs you already have: your date of birth and your full name at birth.

Numerology is not astrology, although the two are used together constantly. Astrology reads the actual sky at your birth; numerology reads the calendar. Both are symbolic languages rather than sciences, and both are at their best as prompts for reflection. How to calculate your life path number

The life path number is numerology's equivalent of the Sun sign: the single most important number, describing your core nature and the road you are on. It is calculated from your full date of birth, and the method matters, because a shortcut (adding all the digits in one row) can hide a master number.

1. Write your birth date as month, day and four-digit year. Example: September 14, 1990.
2. Reduce the month to a single digit. September is 9.
3. Reduce the day. 14 becomes 1 + 4 = 5.
4. Reduce the year. 1990 becomes 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1.
5. Add the three results: 9 + 5 + 1 = 15.
6. Reduce to a single digit: 1 + 5 = 6. This person is a life path 6.

If any of the three parts, or the final sum, lands on 11, 22 or 33, stop there: it is a master number and is written as 11/2, 22/4 or 33/6. November births (month 11), the 11th, 22nd and 29th of any month (2 + 9 = 11), and years that reduce to 11 or 22 are where master numbers appear. Life path number meanings: 1 to 9, 11, 22 and 33

Each number below is a full personality in the tradition; the one-line summaries are the core, and the compatibility notes come from the same body of teaching.

Karmic debt numbers

Some numerologists pay attention to the sum before the final reduction. If your life path total is 13, 14, 16 or 19 before it reduces to 4, 5, 7 or 1, the tradition calls it a karmic debt number: a lesson carried into this life around, respectively, work and discipline (13/4), freedom and excess (14/5), ego and relationships (16/7) and independence (19/1). It is one of numerology's more fatalistic ideas, so hold it lightly; read it as a theme to notice, not a sentence to serve.

The other core numbers

The life path is the headline, but a full numerology profile uses four more numbers, three of them from your name. Name numbers use the Pythagorean letter table, in which A, J and S are 1; B, K and T are 2; C, L and U are 3; D, M and V are 4; E, N and W are 5; F, O and X are 6; G, P and Y are 7; H, Q and Z are 8; and I and R are 9.

Expression (destiny) number. Add the values of every letter in your full name as written on your birth certificate, reduce, and you have the expression number: your talents, the abilities you came in with and the direction they point. Where the life path is the road, the expression number is the vehicle.

Soul urge (heart's desire) number. Add only the vowels of your full birth name. This is what you want underneath what you do: the private motivation. A person with a life path 8 and a soul urge 2 is built for achievement but longs for partnership, which explains a lot of career-versus-relationship tension.

Personality number. Add only the consonants. This is the face you show, the first impression, the part of you people meet before they know you. It is numerology's rising sign.

Birthday number. Simply the day of the month you were born, reduced if needed (a 25th is 2 + 5 = 7; a 14th is 5; an 11th stays 11). It is a specific talent, a secondary flavour to the life path. The September 14 birthday page shows how a birthday number colours a whole date profile.

Personal year number. The one number that changes: add your birth month and day to the current year and reduce. It tells you which of the nine-year cycle's stages you are in, from the fresh start of a 1 year to the completion of a 9 year. A note on name numerology

Name numerology raises two practical questions. First, which name? The tradition uses the full name on your birth certificate for the expression, soul urge and personality numbers, on the reasoning that it is the "original blueprint"; the name you use day to day (a nickname, a married name, a stage name) is read as a secondary influence that describes how you have adapted. Second, does changing your name change your numbers? In the tradition, yes, gradually: the birth name never stops mattering, but a name you use for years adds a layer. Some people choose a spelling for its number; treat that as a personal ritual rather than a lever, because there is no evidence that a name's numerical value affects outcomes.

Compatibility by life path number

Numerology's compatibility rules are broad and should be held loosely, but they are a useful conversation starter. The tradition groups the numbers by temperament: 1, 5 and 7 are the independent, mind-led numbers; 2, 4 and 8 are the practical, security-minded numbers; 3, 6 and 9 are the expressive, heart-led numbers. Pairs within a group tend to understand each other; pairs across groups bring complementary strengths and predictable friction. Classic easy pairings include 1 with 3 and 5, 2 with 4, 6 and 8, 3 with 6 and 9, 4 with 8, 5 with 7, and 6 with 9; classic challenges include 1 with 8 (two leaders), 4 with 5 (order meets chaos) and 7 with 2 (privacy meets closeness). The honest caveat: two numbers cannot describe a relationship, because they describe two people at the level of a single trait each. The two systems overlap most usefully at three points. Calculate your life path by hand once so you understand it. Read the meaning as a description of tendencies, not a verdict. Use the personal year to frame the season you are in. Hold compatibility numbers loosely and check them against real behaviour.
