What is a stellium in astrology?

A stellium is a group of three or more planets in the same sign or the same house of a birth chart. The word comes from the Latin stella, star, and replaced the older term satellitium in the twentieth century. It is the simplest of the aspect patterns, because it is really a cluster of conjunctions: planets close together fuse, and the more that fuse, the more the chart leans in that direction.

The effect is concentration. A chart is normally a committee of ten planets in ten arguments; a stellium is a voting bloc. Whatever sign it sits in becomes the personality's dominant style, often more visible than the Sun sign, and whatever house it sits in becomes the arena the person keeps returning to. That is why stelliums are the number-one reason people say "I do not relate to my sign": a Libra Sun with Mercury, Venus, Mars and Saturn in Scorpio is, in practice, a Scorpio who happens to have a Libra identity.

How many planets count? Astrologers split into two camps. The stricter rule says four or more. The more common modern rule says three or more, provided one of them is the Sun or Moon, or four otherwise. Both camps count only the ten planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto). Chiron, the nodes, Lilith and the angles can sit inside a stellium and add flavour, but they do not make one on their own. A stellium of personal planets (Sun through Mars) is felt more intensely than one made of Jupiter, Saturn and an outer planet, which whole years of births share.

How to find a stellium in your chart

Run your birth chart and read the planet list rather than the wheel; it is easier to count. Group the planets by sign, then by house, and look for any group of three or more. A stellium by sign needs only your birth date (the Moon can be borderline if it changed sign that day). A stellium by house needs your birth time, because houses depend on the Ascendant. Once you have found one, note three details:

• The tightest conjunctions inside it. Venus and Mars 1° apart inside a Leo stellium behave differently from a stellium spread across 28°.
• The ruler of the sign (its dispositor). A Capricorn stellium disposed by a Saturn in Aries takes its instructions from that Saturn.

Stelliums are also generational events. In January 2020 the Sun, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto were all in Capricorn; in February 1962 seven bodies gathered in Aquarius. In spring 2026 the Sun joined Saturn and Neptune in Aries, so babies born in late March and April 2026 carry an Aries stellium that anyone with early Aries planets felt as a transit. The sign of a stellium tells you the style that dominates. In brief:

Stelliums in relationships and synastry

A stellium is a big target. In synastry, a partner whose planets fall in the sign of your stellium activates most of your chart at once, which feels like instant recognition and can tip into overwhelm. A partner whose Saturn squares your stellium will press on four planets with one placement, and the relationship will keep circling the theme of that sign. Two people with stelliums in the same sign share a dialect, and share blind spots. Common misconceptions about stelliums

• "Two planets can be a stellium." Two is a conjunction. Three with a luminary, or four, is the threshold.

• "A stellium is always a gift." It is a concentration. Gifts and blind spots come together, and the empty parts of the chart matter just as much.
• "Outer-planet stelliums are personal." Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto together in Capricorn belong to a whole cohort; add the Sun or Moon and it becomes yours.
