What is a horoscope?

A horoscope is a short forecast that compares where the planets are right now with a reference point: your Sun sign in a newspaper column, your rising sign in a better one, or your full birth chart in the AstraLink app. The word comes from the Greek hōroskopos, "hour-watcher", and originally meant the degree rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. That is why astrologers still say your rising sign is your real horoscope, and why the Sun-sign version is only a rough sketch of it.

Every horoscope you will ever read is built from the same four ingredients:

• The Moon. It changes sign every two to two and a half days and sets the emotional weather. Most of what a daily horoscope says about mood, home, cravings and timing is the Moon.
• The fast planets. Mercury (thinking, messages, decisions), Venus (love, money, taste) and Mars (drive, conflict, desire) cross a sign in weeks. They write the week's storyline.
• The slow planets. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move slowly, so they set the year's chapters rather than the day's mood. In 2026–27 that means Saturn and Neptune in Aries, Uranus in Gemini, Jupiter in Leo and Pluto in Aquarius.
• Your reference point. Which life area (house) a transit lands in depends on what you count as your first house. The same sky produces twelve different horoscopes because each sign starts the wheel in a different place.

Daily horoscope: how today's forecast is made

A daily horoscope for your sign starts with the Moon. If the Moon is in Pisces today, it sits in the 7th house for Virgo (partners), the 1st house for Pisces (you), the 10th house for Gemini (career) and so on around the wheel. The astrologer, or the model, then adds what the Moon is doing: is it new, full, squaring Mars, or in a Void-of-Course window where nothing seems to land? Next come the exact aspects of the day between the fast planets, and finally the slow-planet backdrop that everyone shares.

That is why two daily horoscopes for the same sign can sound different: one writer leaned on the Moon, another on a Venus–Saturn square, a third simply recycled last week. Horoscope today, tomorrow, this week, this month

Each timeframe is driven by a different layer of the sky, so read them differently:

• Today and tomorrow are Moon-driven. Use them for mood, timing a conversation, and the small decisions: send it now or wait until the Moon changes sign.
• This week is Mercury-, Venus- and Mars-driven. Use it for meetings, dates, money moves and anything that needs momentum.
• This month is set by the Sun's sign (the season), the new and full moons, and any retrogrades. Use it for planning and for knowing which life area gets the spotlight.
• This year belongs to Jupiter, Saturn and the outer planets. Read it once, then check the 2026 cosmic calendar as the dates arrive.

Sun sign or rising sign: which horoscope should I read?

Read both, and know what each one is for. Your Sun sign horoscope describes the season's effect on your identity, energy and purpose; it is the same for everyone born in your month. Your rising sign horoscope is house-accurate: because the rising sign sets the first house of your real chart, the transits land in the correct life areas, so "a career shake-up this week" actually points at your career. If you also know your Moon sign, its horoscope tells you how you will feel about all of it. Together they are your Big Three, and knowing them is the single biggest upgrade you can make to horoscope reading.

Love, career, money and health horoscopes

Focus horoscopes look at one slice of the same sky:

• Love follows Venus (what you want), Mars (how you pursue it), the Moon (what feels safe) and the 5th and 7th houses. It gets interesting when Venus is retrograde, as it is from October 3 to November 13, 2026. Pair it with a real compatibility read for the person you are actually seeing.

• Sun in Libra (Sep 22 – Oct 22): relationships, fairness, and the yearly relationship audit. New moon in Libra on October 10.
• Venus retrograde in Scorpio, Oct 3 – Nov 13: exes resurface, desires get re-examined, and big purchases feel different in hindsight. Read the Venus retrograde briefing before you make a permanent decision about a person or a price.

What the signs share: elements and modalities

The twelve signs are not twelve random personalities; they are a grid. Four elements describe temperament: Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) run on enthusiasm and act first; Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) run on results and act when it is practical; Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) run on ideas and act when it makes sense; Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) run on feeling and act when it is safe. Three modalities describe timing: cardinal signs start things, fixed signs sustain them, mutable signs adapt and finish them.
