What planet is in retrograde right now?

Start with the box above: it reads AstraLink's verified sky data and tells you, today, whether Mercury, Venus or Mars is retrograde — the three planets people usually mean when they ask. If Mercury is the one on your mind, the first line says yes or no, names the sign, and gives the date it turns direct. Those three fast "inner" bodies are what this page tracks live, because they move quickly enough that "right now" genuinely changes week to week. The slower outer planets (Jupiter through Pluto) are a different story, covered further down.

If you want the long version of the headline act, the Mercury retrograde guide has every date, the shadow periods and a survival plan; the cosmic calendar maps the whole sky through 2027; and today's sky shows the Moon's phase and every planet's current position.

What a retrograde actually is (it's an optical effect)

Here is the part most horoscopes skip: no planet ever moves backwards. A retrograde is an illusion of perspective. Every planet orbits the Sun in the same direction, always forward. What changes is our viewing angle from a moving Earth. When we overtake a slower outer planet, or a faster inner planet overtakes us, that planet appears to slow, stop and drift backwards against the background stars for a few weeks, then resume its normal path. It is the same thing you see from a train: pass a slower train and, for a moment, it looks like it is rolling backwards, even though it is still going forward.

So "Mercury in retrograde" is shorthand for "Mercury appears to be moving backwards from where we are standing." The planet is fine. The orbit is fine. What is real is the apparent reversal — a predictable, calculable, centuries-old piece of sky-watching. Astrology reads that apparent backward motion symbolically: a planet retracing its steps is treated as a cue to retrace yours. If you like the clean version of the split, astrology vs astronomy draws the line, and the retrograde glossary entry keeps the definition handy.

Why Mercury retrograde gets all the attention

Mercury is the fastest planet, so it retrogrades the most — three or four times a year, more than any other — which alone makes it the one everyone has heard of. It also rules the stuff that is easy to notice going sideways: messaging, contracts, travel, devices, scheduling, the small print. When those wobble, you feel it in your day, so Mercury collected the reputation and the memes. Mercury the planet covers what it governs in a chart; Venus (love, money, values) and Mars (drive, conflict, desire) retrograde far less often, so their cycles are rarer and, when they do happen, a bigger deal.

A quick reality check worth keeping: roughly 27% of US adults say they believe in astrology (and about 43% of women aged 18–49), which is why "is Mercury retrograde right now" tips into a small search panic a few times a year. Knowing the actual dates is the cure for the panic.

What's in retrograde in 2026: the inner-planet schedule

For 2026, the verified inner-planet picture is short and specific:

  • Mercury retrogrades three times: February 26 – March 20 (entirely in Pisces — it does not dip into Aquarius), June 29 – July 23 (Cancer), and October 24 – November 13 (entirely in Scorpio — it does not slide back into Libra). All three begin in water signs, so 2026 is a notably feelings-first year for Mercury: misread tone, old conversations resurfacing, the past arriving with a charge.
  • Venus retrogrades once: October 3 – November 13, the only one of the year. It begins in Scorpio, reverses back into Libra around October 25, and stations direct in Libra — so late October stacks a relationship-and-money review (Venus) on top of a communication review (Mercury) at the same time. The Venus retrograde news post and the Mercury retrograde October post track that double window as it unfolds.
  • Mars is not retrograde at all in 2026. Its next retrograde begins in January 2027, so for the whole of this year, drive and momentum have a clear runway.

The table below lays out the inner-planet dates; the signs are where each retrograde actually happens, verified against the ephemeris.

Inner-planet dates (the ones people search), verified against the ephemeris. Times are UTC and can shift by a day in US time zones. The outer planets are each retrograde for about four to five months a year — check the live calendar in the app for their exact stations.

What about the outer planets?

At almost any moment there is something retrograde, because the slow outer planets each spend roughly four to five months a year in retrograde — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto take long, quiet turns backward as Earth laps them. Their retrogrades are so routine that astrologers treat them as background weather rather than events. The live box above shows them too, and the exact station dates for every planet are on the retrograde calendar 2026 and in the guides to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto retrograde. You can also subscribe to the sky calendar (.ics). For how any of these touch your chart specifically, the Cosmic Simulator maps the current transits onto your natal planets and explains, in plain language, which ones actually matter for you.

Review, not ruin

A retrograde is a pattern, not a prophecy. It does not break your phone, end your relationship or void your contracts; the failure rate of hardware is the same on October 24 as on any other day. What a retrograde offers is a rhythm — a recurring cue to slow down and do the things that start with re: review, revise, reconnect, research, repair, rest. Front-load the irreversible stuff (signing, buying, launching) for when the relevant planet is direct, and use the backward weeks to finish, edit and reconsider.

If your real question is timing a specific decision, the best time to sign a contract applies this to the most-asked one, and the AI Advisor turns any topic and date into a straight answer. Retrograde right now: questions

What planet is in retrograde right now?

Check the live status box at the top of this page — it reads AstraLink's verified sky data and tells you whether Mercury, Venus or Mars is retrograde today, in which sign, and when it turns direct. Those fast inner planets change week to week. The slower outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) are each retrograde for about four to five months a year, so one of them is almost always in reverse.

Is Mercury in retrograde right now?

The box above answers this directly, because the date decides it. In 2026 Mercury is retrograde three times: February 26 to March 20 (in Pisces), June 29 to July 23 (Cancer), and October 24 to November 13 (Scorpio). Outside those windows, Mercury is direct. If today falls inside one of them, the status box says yes, names the sign, and gives the date Mercury stations direct.

Is there a retrograde happening right now?

Almost always, yes — but it depends which planets you count. The slow outer planets (Jupiter through Pluto) are each retrograde roughly four to five months a year, so at any given moment at least one of them is reversing. When people ask, though, they usually mean the fast inner planets. For a clear yes-or-no on Mercury, Venus and Mars today, use the live box at the top of this page.

How many planets are in retrograde right now?

It varies constantly. The three inner planets — Mercury, Venus and Mars — are retrograde only for short, specific windows each year (and Mars not at all in 2026), while the five outer planets each take a long annual turn backward. On a typical day you might have two or three outer planets retrograde plus, occasionally, Mercury or Venus. The live status box and the app calendar give the exact count for today.

What does it mean when a planet is in retrograde?

It means the planet appears to move backwards through the zodiac from Earth's viewpoint — an optical effect of our orbits, not a real reversal. Astrologically, it is read as a time to revisit whatever that planet governs: Mercury for communication and plans, Venus for love and money, Mars for drive and desire. Treat it as a review period — a pattern to work with, not a prophecy to fear.
