What are fixed signs in astrology?

The fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. They belong to one of the three modalities (also called qualities or quadruplicities), the system that sorts the twelve signs by how they act rather than what they are made of. Elements answer the second question: fire, earth, air, water. Modalities answer the first: does a sign start things (cardinal), sustain them (fixed) or adapt them (mutable)?

The logic is seasonal. Each season in the tropical zodiac is three signs long. The first sign begins at an equinox or solstice and is cardinal: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. The second sign holds the season at its height and is fixed: Taurus in mid-spring, Leo in high summer, Scorpio in deep autumn, Aquarius in the dead of winter. Their symbols in the ancient tetramorph (bull, lion, eagle for Scorpio, and the water-bearer as the human figure) are the four "living creatures" of Ezekiel's vision, which tells you how long people have been reading these four as the pillars of the year.

Your Sun sign gives you one vote; your chart gives you ten. To find your dominant modality, list your Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, note the sign each occupies, and tally cardinal, fixed and mutable. Fixed signs in relationships and compatibility

Fixed signs are the relationship signs, in the specific sense that they are built to stay. They commit slowly, because commitment to a fixed sign is permanent by design, and they leave slowly, sometimes years after the relationship ended emotionally. Two fixed signs together produce fierce loyalty and legendary stalemates: nobody yields, so arguments freeze rather than resolve. The Leo and Scorpio pairing is the classic example, a square between two fixed signs that either becomes a fortress or a siege. Fixed with cardinal works as initiator and sustainer, as long as the cardinal partner does not mistake steadiness for passivity. Fixed with mutable is the softest match: the mutable partner bends, the fixed partner anchors, and the risk is the fixed partner never noticing how much bending is happening.
