Will my ex come back? What astrology can and cannot tell you
Let's start with the honest part, because you deserve it more than a horoscope does. No chart can tell you whether a specific person will text you next month. Astrology does not see their phone, their therapist or the conversation they had with their best friend on Tuesday. What it sees is patterns: the kind of ending this was, the transit that framed it, whether the door is the sort that reopens, and where you are in your own cycle. Those patterns are genuinely useful, and they are the whole of what this page offers.
Here is what breakup astrology can do. It can identify which transit coincided with the ending, which tells you whether it was a slow structural collapse (Saturn), a bolt from nowhere (Uranus), a power struggle that changed you both (Pluto), a fog that lifted (Neptune) or a retrograde pause (Venus or Mercury) that often does reverse. It can show, through synastry, whether the relationship had the contacts that make people return (Saturn, the nodes, Sun–Moon) or the ones that make people burn out (Pluto squares, 12th house overlays). And it can estimate, from the transit's duration, roughly how long the hard part lasts. That is a lot. It is just not a yes or a no.
The transits that mark breakups
Most breakups that feel astrologically loaded happen under one of a handful of transits to Venus (how you love), the 7th house or its ruler (partnership), the Moon (emotional security) or the Descendant. Run your own chart through the Cosmic Simulator to see which of these is active for you now.
Saturn to Venus or the 7th house. The structural ending. Saturn conjunct, square or opposite your Venus tests whether the relationship is real; if it is not, it ends, usually slowly and with a sense that everyone saw it coming. Saturn is in Aries from February 2026 until 2028, so if you have Venus or the 7th house cusp in Aries, Cancer, Libra or Capricorn, this is the transit to check first. Saturn endings rarely reverse, because what ended was the structure, not the feeling.
Uranus to Venus or the 7th house. The sudden ending. Someone leaves, someone realises, something is discovered, and it happens in a week. Uranus entered Gemini in April 2026, so Venus or the Descendant in Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces is in range. Uranus breakups are shocking but often less final than they feel: the transit asked for freedom, not necessarily from this person.
Pluto to Venus, the Moon or the 7th house. The transformational ending. Obsession, control, a relationship that changed who you are and then could not survive the change. Pluto is in Aquarius, touching fixed-sign Venus and Moon placements (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius). These take the longest to heal and the people involved rarely go back to what they were, though they sometimes go back to each other in a different form.
Neptune to Venus or the 7th house. The dissolving ending. You realise you were in love with a version of them. Neptune entered Aries in January 2026. Neptune breakups have a specific grief: mourning something that partly did not exist.
Venus retrograde. The pause. Venus goes retrograde roughly every 18 months, and relationships that end during the retrograde frequently resume, or at least reopen, after it. In 2026, Venus is retrograde in Scorpio from October 3 to November 13. A breakup in that window is the most "will they come back" breakup of the year, and the honest answer is: quite possibly, and you should decide before they do whether you want them to. Our note on the Venus retrograde in October 2026 has the dates.
Eclipses on the 1st/7th or 5th/11th axis. Eclipses close chapters. A relationship that ends within two weeks of an eclipse on your relationship axis was usually already over in some way that had not been said out loud.
Patterns that make people return, and patterns that do not
This is where synastry, the comparison of your two charts, earns its keep. If you have both birth dates, the compatibility calculator shows the contacts; the app shows all of them with birth times.
Contacts that pull people back: Saturn conjunct or trine the other's Sun, Moon or Venus (the glue; these couples often reconcile at least once). Planets on each other's lunar nodes, especially the South Node (the sense of unfinished business, which cuts both ways). Sun–Moon conjunctions (the feeling of home). Strong 7th house overlays.
Contacts that burn out: Pluto square or opposite Venus or the Moon (returns happen, but as a rerun of the same struggle). Mars square Mars or Venus (the fighting outlasts the affection). 12th house overlays without grounding contacts (the relationship was partly a dream). No Saturn contacts at all (nothing held it; nothing holds a return).
If the chart says the door is the kind that reopens, the question becomes whether you want to walk back through it. That is not an astrology question.
A healing timeline, by transit
Grief does not run on a schedule, but transits do, and their durations are a fair guide to how long the acute phase lasts.
The first lunar cycle (about 4 weeks). Whatever you feel in the first month is weather, not climate. Mark the next new moon (October 10 in Libra, November 9 in Scorpio, December 9 in Sagittarius, 2026) as the earliest point to make a decision about contact.
Mercury and Venus retrogrades (3 to 6 weeks). If the breakup fell under one of these, wait until the planet is direct plus a week before believing anything either of you says. For autumn 2026, that means the week after November 13.
A Saturn or Pluto hard aspect (9 months to 2 years). These transits make three passes: direct, retrograde, direct. The first pass is the shock, the second is the relapse, the third is the resolution. If you know the dates, you know when the last pass ends, and that is typically when the sadness stops being the main thing about your day. The Saturn return guide covers the version of this that hits at 29 and 58.
Your next Venus return (within a year). Venus returns to its natal position roughly once a year. Many people find that the year turns over emotionally near their Venus return, when a new attraction or a new sense of self shows up.
A rule of thumb: the acute phase lasts about as long as the transit that opened it, and the relationship's importance in your life is about proportional to how many contacts it had in synastry. Neither is a life sentence.
What to do now
- Find the transit. Open the Cosmic Simulator and look at what is hitting Venus, the Moon and the 7th house. Name the kind of ending. It makes the story make sense.
- Do not contact them under a retrograde or a void Moon. The message you send during Mercury retrograde will be misread; the one you send during a Void-of-Course Moon will go nowhere. Wait for clear sky and a clear head.
- Run the synastry once, then close it. See the pattern. Notice which contacts you keep choosing, then read why you keep attracting emotionally unavailable partners if the pattern has a name.
- Ask the AI Advisor a specific question. Not "will they come back" but "is this a good week to have a closing conversation" or "when does this transit ease." The AI Advisor takes a topic and a date and answers from your chart.
- Set a date to stop checking. The next new moon is a good one. After that, the chart is for you, not for them.
Getting over an ex, by your own chart
Searches for "get over ex zodiac" usually want a Sun-sign list. The more useful read is your Moon sign (how you grieve) and your Venus sign (what you need to feel loved again). A Cancer Moon needs to talk and be held; an Aquarius Moon needs to rationalise and be left alone; a Scorpio Moon needs to feel the whole thing before it can let go. Venus in fire heals through newness, Venus in earth through routine and the body, Venus in air through conversation and friends, Venus in water through time and tenderness. The natal chart in the app names all of these for you; the birth chart calculator gives you the Moon and Venus signs now.
