Moon phase today: the sky right now, explained

The widget below shows the moon phase today, its illumination and the sign the Moon is in, computed live in your browser. Underneath, this page explains how to read it: what each of the eight phases means, how the Moon's sign colours the day, where the slow planets are right now, and how any of it becomes personal when laid over your own chart.

Quick answer

The moon phase today is shown live in the widget on this page, along with the Moon's current zodiac sign and illumination. The Moon cycles through eight phases every 29.5 days and changes sign every two to three days; the phase sets the energy (build or release) and the sign sets the mood (how the day feels).

What is the phase of the moon today, and why does it matter?

The Moon orbits the Earth once every 29.5 days, and the phase you see is simply how much of its sunlit side faces us. Astrology reads that geometry as a cycle of energy: the new moon is a seed, the full moon is the flower, and the two weeks between each are for growing and for letting go. You do not need to feel it to use it. Knowing that the Moon is waning tells you this is a week for finishing, not launching; knowing it is a day from full tells you why everyone in your group chat is dramatic.

The widget gives you the phase and the percentage of illumination. Here is how to read the eight phases:

  • New Moon (0%). Sun and Moon in the same sign. Low energy, high potential. Set intentions; do not expect results yet.
  • Waxing Crescent (1–49%, growing). First moves. Gather information, take the first small step, protect the idea from critics.
  • First Quarter (50%, growing). The first obstacle appears. Decide, adjust and push through; this is the action phase.
  • Waxing Gibbous (51–99%, growing). Refine. Edit, fix, ask for feedback, tighten the plan before the reveal.
  • Full Moon (100%). Sun opposite Moon. Peak visibility and emotion. Things come to light, culminate or get decided; celebrate or release, but do not start.
  • Waning Gibbous (99–51%, shrinking). Share what you learned. Gratitude, teaching, distributing results.
  • Last Quarter (50%, shrinking). Release. Clear out what did not work, forgive, delete, close the loop.
  • Waning Crescent / Balsamic (49–1%, shrinking). Rest and reflect. Sleep more, plan less, let the next intention arrive on its own.

The next new and full moons, with their signs and themes, are listed on the cosmic calendar; the next full moon is on October 26 in Taurus.

Where is the Moon today in astrology? The Moon sign

The Moon changes zodiac sign every two to three days, and astrologers treat the Moon's sign as the emotional weather of the day: what people are in the mood for, what will land and what will not. It is also the basis of everyday timing. Sign a lease when the Moon is in an earth sign; have the hard conversation when it is in Libra rather than Aries; launch a campaign in Leo, not Pisces. The table below gives the twelve moods.

There is one more thing to check before you act on the Moon sign: whether the Moon is Void of Course. Between its last major aspect in a sign and its entry into the next, the Moon is considered idle, and traditional astrologers avoid starting anything important in that window. It happens every couple of days and can last from minutes to most of a day. The app's moon calendar flags each void window; this page's widget does not, so treat it as a first look.

Where are the planets right now?

The Moon is the fastest thing in the sky, which is why it gets a widget. The other planets move slowly enough that a paragraph can describe them for weeks at a time. As of late September 2026:

  • Sun in Libra since September 23, moving into Scorpio on October 23.
  • Venus in Scorpio, about to station retrograde on October 3 (until November 13). Relationship and money reviews begin.
  • Mercury heading toward its retrograde in Scorpio on October 24 (until November 13).
  • Jupiter in Leo since June 30, 2026: growth through visibility, creativity and romance.
  • Saturn in Aries, retrograde until December: the year's structures being tested.
  • Uranus in Gemini: the long rewiring of how we communicate and learn.
  • Neptune in Aries, retrograde: ideals being reality-checked.
  • Pluto in Aquarius, retrograde, stationing direct in mid-October.
  • North Node in Aquarius, South Node in Leo since late July 2026.

For what all of this means across the year, read astrology 2026; for the month ahead, the October 2026 transits brief. The app shows the exact degree of every planet in real time, including Mars and the fast-moving inner planets that shift too often to list here.

What's going on in astrology right now: how transits become personal

Everything above is the weather. A transit is the weather hitting your house: a planet in the sky forming an aspect (conjunction, square, opposition, trine, sextile) to a planet or point in your birth chart. Today's Moon in Taurus is a fact; today's Moon conjunct your natal Venus is an experience, usually a pleasant one. Saturn retrograde in Aries is a headline; Saturn retrograde crossing your Aries Sun is your Saturn return, and you will have noticed.

Reading transits by hand means knowing your chart's degrees and checking them against an ephemeris. The Cosmic Simulator does it for you: it overlays the live sky on your natal chart and explains each active contact ("Moon conjunct Uranus: expect a surprise you actually welcome"). The daily focus screen then boils it down to advice of the day, watch-outs, lucky numbers and colours and your biorhythms. Enter your birth data once; the sky does the rest. A quick daily routine

  1. Check the phase: waxing means build, waning means release.
  2. Check the sign: match the day's task to the Moon's mood using the table.
  3. Check for a Void-of-Course window before anything you want to stick.
  4. Check your own transits in the app, or read your sign's horoscope for today as a first approximation.

Two minutes, and you are planning with the same information astrologers use.

Methodology

The widget calculates the Moon's phase and tropical sign from the current time using standard astronomical formulas; it is accurate to within a fraction of a degree and does not need your location. Planetary positions in the text are updated editorially; the app computes them live with ephemeris-grade precision.

Moon today: questions

What is the phase of the moon today?

The live widget at the top of this page shows today's moon phase, its percentage of illumination and the Moon's current zodiac sign, calculated in your browser from the current time. The phase is one of eight: new, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, last quarter or waning crescent. Waxing phases favour starting; waning phases favour finishing and release.

Where is the moon today in astrology?

The Moon's zodiac sign, shown in the widget, changes every two to three days as the Moon moves through the twelve signs in about 27.3 days. Astrologers read the Moon sign as the emotional tone of the day: Aries is impatient, Taurus is steady, Gemini is talkative, Cancer is tender, and so on. Match tasks to the mood for smoother timing.

Where are the planets right now?

As of late September 2026: Sun in Libra, Venus and Mercury in Scorpio (both about to turn retrograde), Jupiter in Leo, Saturn in Aries (retrograde), Uranus in Gemini, Neptune in Aries (retrograde), Pluto in Aquarius (retrograde until mid-October), and the lunar nodes in Aquarius and Leo. The AstraLink app shows exact degrees for every planet live, including Mars and the Moon.

What's going on in astrology right now?

The defining story of autumn 2026 is a double retrograde: Venus retrograde in Scorpio from October 3 to November 13 and Mercury retrograde from October 24 to November 13, bracketing a Libra new moon on October 10 and a Taurus full moon on October 26. It is a season for reviewing relationships, money and agreements rather than starting new ones, against the longer backdrop of Saturn and Neptune in Aries and Uranus in Gemini.

How does the moon phase affect mood?

Astrologically, the waxing Moon corresponds to rising energy and outward focus, the full moon to peak emotion and visibility, and the waning Moon to reflection and release. Many people report restlessness or poor sleep near the full moon; the research on this is mixed. Treat the phase as a planning tool and a language for patterns, not as a cause.

Is the Moon void of course right now?

The widget on this page does not show Void-of-Course status; the AstraLink moon calendar does, for every day. The Moon is void between its last major aspect in a sign and its entry into the next sign, a window that occurs every two to three days and lasts from a few minutes to most of a day. Our Void of Course Moon guide explains how to spot it yourself.
