Lesson: Void of Course Moon. How to spot it and plan around it

Objective

After this lesson you will be able to (1) explain what a void of course Moon is in one sentence, (2) find the Moon's last aspect in its current sign using an app or an ephemeris, (3) identify the start and end of a void window, and (4) decide what to do and not do during one. This is the skill behind the void alerts in the AstraLink moon calendar and one of the inputs the AI Advisor uses when it tells you a day is poor for starting something.

Concept: what is a void moon?

The Moon moves through the zodiac faster than anything else, about 13 degrees a day, so it passes through one sign every two and a half days. As it travels through a sign, it forms aspects with the other planets: conjunctions (0°), sextiles (60°), squares (90°), trines (120°) and oppositions (180°). These five are the major or Ptolemaic aspects, and in the traditional rule only they count.

At some point in every sign the Moon makes its last major aspect before it leaves. From that moment until it enters the next sign, it is void of course: literally, off its course, with nothing left to do. Astrologers since at least the ninth century have observed that things begun in a void window tend to go nowhere, change unexpectedly or turn out to be unnecessary. The Moon has no more appointments, so the matter has no more momentum.

That is the whole rule. The Moon is void from its last major aspect in a sign until its ingress into the next sign. Void windows can last a few minutes or, when the Moon's last aspect happens early in a sign, more than a day. On average the Moon is void several hours in every two-and-a-half-day cycle, which adds up to a surprising fraction of any month.

Two refinements you will meet:

• Which planets count. The traditional rule uses the seven classical planets (Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) plus the Moon itself. Many modern astrologers also count Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, which shortens void windows. • Exceptions. Some astrologers hold that the Moon is never truly void in Taurus, Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces, where it is strong (the so-called Lilly exception, after William Lilly, who wrote that in those signs the Moon "performeth somewhat"). Others ignore this. Learn the base rule first; add nuance later.

Skill: how to find the Moon's last aspect

You need two things: the Moon's current sign and degree, and the degrees of the other planets. Any chart app gives you both; a printed ephemeris gives them at midnight or noon each day.

1. Note the Moon's sign and degree. Say the Moon is at 22° Leo.
2. List every planet's degree, ignoring sign. You are looking for planets whose degree the Moon can still reach with a major aspect before 30° Leo. A planet at 27° of any sign can be aspected by the Moon at 27° Leo (conjunction if in Leo, sextile if in Gemini or Libra, square if in Taurus or Scorpio, trine if in Aries or Sagittarius, opposition if in Aquarius).
3. Find the highest-degree aspect still ahead. If Venus is at 25° Sagittarius and Saturn is at 28° Aries, the Moon will trine Venus at 25° Leo and then trine Saturn at 28° Leo. Saturn is the last aspect. If nothing sits between 22° and 30° in any sign, the Moon is already void.
4. Mark the void. The void begins the moment the Moon reaches 28° Leo (exact trine to Saturn) and ends when it enters 0° Virgo. At 13° a day, roughly two degrees is about three and a half hours.

Example timeline

An illustrative day (the positions are constructed for teaching; check the live calendar for real windows):

• 06:10 Moon at 19° Leo squares Mars at 19° Scorpio. Energetic, argumentative morning. Not void.
• 09:40 Moon at 21° Leo sextiles Mercury at 21° Libra. Good for calls, emails, quick decisions. Not void.
• 13:15 Moon at 23° Leo trines Jupiter at 23° Sagittarius. Generous, expansive early afternoon; a favourable time to ask for something. Not void.
• 20:05 Moon at 27° Leo opposes Pluto at 27° Aquarius. The last aspect. Intense evening; something comes to a head.
• 20:05 to 01:30 Void of course. The Moon drifts from 27° to 30° Leo with no further aspects. Finish the dishes, watch the film, do not send the message you have been drafting.
• 01:30 Moon enters 0° Virgo. Void ends. The next cycle of aspects begins with whatever planet is lowest in degree.

Notice that the useful information is not "the Moon is void tonight" but when it becomes void, because the hours before the last aspect are often the most productive of the day.

What to do in a void window

The void is not dangerous. It is unproductive for starting and excellent for everything else.

Good uses: routine work, cleaning, filing, rest, reflection, meditation, journaling, finishing tasks already underway, brainstorming without committing, socialising with people you already know, sleeping.

Avoid if you can: signing contracts, launching a product, sending the important pitch, first dates, job interviews, buying big-ticket items, starting a trip, making a decision you cannot reverse. Not because disaster follows, but because the pattern is that these things do not stick or need redoing. A note on unavoidable timing. Life does not schedule itself around the Moon. If you must act in a void, do it as a continuation of something already begun rather than a fresh start, and keep expectations of the outcome loose. Many astrologers actually like the void for things they want not to escalate: a difficult email that should not start a war, a purchase you want to be able to return.

Practice exercise

Open any chart app set to the current moment, or the moon calendar in AstraLink.

1. Write down the Moon's sign and degree right now.
2. List the planets whose degree is higher than the Moon's (any sign). For each, name the aspect the Moon will make.
3. Identify the last one. That is when the next void begins.
4. Estimate when the Moon enters the next sign (remaining degrees divided by roughly 13 per day, or 0.55 per hour).
5. Check your answer against the app's void indicator. If they differ, check whether the app counts the outer planets.
6. Then plan one thing for before the void and one thing for during it.

Do this three days in a row and the rhythm becomes intuitive. Most students report that within a week they start noticing void windows in retrospect: the meeting that went nowhere, the message that got no reply.
