What is an eclipse season, and why does 2027 have two?

Eclipses happen when a New or Full Moon falls close to the lunar nodes, the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's. Because the nodes move slowly backward through the zodiac, the Sun lines up with them roughly every six months, and each alignment produces an eclipse season of two or three eclipses about two weeks apart. A solar eclipse is a New Moon near a node: a beginning with unusual force. A lunar eclipse is a Full Moon near a node: a culmination, a reveal, often an ending.

The nodes moved onto the Leo–Aquarius axis in July 2026 (North Node in Aquarius, South Node in Leo), which is why most of the 2027 eclipses land in those two signs. 2026's own eclipse seasons are already behind us, so there are no more eclipses this year; the next one opens in February 2027. Solar eclipse 2027: why August 2 is the one everyone will talk about

On August 2, 2027 the Moon will cover the Sun completely for more than six minutes along a path that crosses southern Spain, North Africa and the Middle East, making it the longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century. It will not be visible from the United States, so what Americans get is the astrology, not the spectacle.

Astrologically, it is a total solar eclipse in Leo at the South Node. Leo rules the heart: romance, creativity, children, play, pride and the need to be seen. The South Node is the release point. Put together, this eclipse is about letting go of an old story of how you get attention and affection, whether that is performing for approval, waiting to be chosen, or a creative identity you have outgrown. The lunar eclipse in Aquarius two weeks later completes the thought: what you release in Leo makes room for the Aquarius side, community, friendship, the long game.

A note on the bigger sky: Jupiter spends June 2026 to July 2027 in Leo and leaves the sign just before the eclipse, so the year leading up to August 2 is a Leo-flavored expansion; the eclipse then edits it.

Lunar eclipse 2027: the quieter events

All of 2027's lunar eclipses are penumbral, which means the Moon passes through the outer part of Earth's shadow and dims rather than turning red. Astrologers generally read penumbral eclipses as softer versions of the theme: a realization rather than a rupture. The late-February Virgo lunar eclipse is about work, health and service; the mid-July Capricorn one is about responsibility and career structures; the mid-August Aquarius one closes the summer season and echoes the total solar eclipse two weeks earlier. Who should watch the 2027 eclipses?

Leo and Aquarius. Sun, Moon or rising in either sign puts you in the front row for both seasons. Expect visible changes in relationships (Leo's 7th house is Aquarius and vice versa), identity and how you spend your creative energy.

Taurus and Scorpio. The other two fixed signs square the Leo–Aquarius axis, so the eclipses tend to arrive as pressure to change something you have been holding fixed: home, money, a relationship, a job.

Virgo, Pisces, Capricorn and Cancer. The February and July lunar eclipses fall on your axes and bring smaller but personal reveals about work, health and duty.

By placement. Eclipses matter most when they fall within a few degrees of a natal planet or angle. Anyone with planets in Leo or Aquarius, or with the Ascendant or Midheaven there, should note both seasons. If your natal nodes are also in Leo–Aquarius (roughly every 18–19 years: the late 2000s, around 1989–1990, the early 1970s), 2027 is close to a nodal return, a year when your life direction gets a serious update.

Eclipses and love: what the 2027 seasons mean for dating and relationships

Eclipses accelerate. Relationships that were drifting end; connections that were quietly building become official; people meet under an eclipse and feel they have known each other for years. Because Leo is the sign of romance and Aquarius the sign of friendship and community, 2027's eclipses are unusually relevant to dating: friends-to-lovers stories, relationships that begin in group settings or online communities, and honest reckonings about whether you are loved for who you are or for the role you play.

The traditional advice is not to start something on an eclipse day itself: not the first date, not the proposal, not the first message to an ex. Leo rules creative work, leadership and visibility; Aquarius rules technology, networks and collective projects. Expect 2027's eclipse seasons to bring visibility (the promotion, the public mistake, the project that suddenly gets attention) and shifts in how you earn through platforms and communities. The usual guidance holds: avoid launching, signing or investing on eclipse days if you have the choice, and make decisions in the two weeks after, when the picture is clearer. How to prepare for eclipse season 2027 using your chart

1. Find your Leo and Aquarius houses. Whatever house holds Leo in your natal chart is where the August 2 eclipse releases something; the Aquarius house is where February begins something. The 5th and 11th, 1st and 7th, 4th and 10th pairs are the most visible.
