What is the MC in astrology?

The MC, or Midheaven, is the point where the ecliptic (the Sun's apparent path) crosses the meridian above the horizon at your exact time and place of birth. The abbreviation comes from the Latin Medium Coeli, "middle of the sky", because at that moment it is the highest part of the zodiac in the sky. In quadrant house systems such as Placidus (the default on this site and in the AstraLink app) the MC is also the cusp of the 10th house.

Astrologically, the Midheaven is the summit of your chart and therefore the summit of your public life. It describes vocation rather than just job title: the field you are pulled toward, the reputation you build, the way authority figures see you, and the kind of achievement that feels like yours rather than borrowed. Traditional astrology also reads it for one parent, usually the one who modelled ambition or public conduct. The MC is one of the four angles of the chart, along with the Ascendant, the Descendant and the IC, and angles are the most personal, time-sensitive points you own.

Because the MC is a point and not a planet, it does not act; it receives. Planets conjunct the Midheaven (within roughly 5°) colour the whole career story, and the planet that rules the MC sign becomes a career significator worth following around the chart.

How to find the Midheaven in your chart

You need three things: birth date, birth time and birth place. The Midheaven moves through the entire zodiac every 24 hours, about one degree every four minutes, so a birth time that is off by an hour can put it in a different sign. If your certificate says "about 3 p.m.", treat the MC sign as a hypothesis and check whether the description fits.

A dating site talking about careers? Yes, because the MC is where two lives become one public story. In synastry, a partner's planets conjunct your Midheaven mean they visibly shape your reputation and direction: their Sun on your MC and people start seeing you as a unit; their Saturn on your MC and they become your most demanding mentor. The MC-IC axis is also the home-versus-world axis, so a couple whose MC signs square each other often disagrees about how public the relationship should be, not about whether it works. "Power couple" charts usually show one person's Jupiter or Sun on the other's MC.

Common misconceptions about the MC

• "The Midheaven is my career." It is your vocation and reputation. Plenty of Pisces Midheavens work in finance; they are the ones known for intuition on the trading floor.
• "MC and 10th house are the same thing." In Placidus they share a cusp; in whole-sign houses the MC can fall in the 9th or 11th. The point is the same; the house label differs.
• "You can find it without a birth time." You cannot. A noon-chart Midheaven is a guess, not a placement.
• "The MC is fixed by 30." The point does not move, but by progression the Midheaven advances about one degree a year, which is why vocations shift in your thirties and forties.
