Profection year: the time-lord cycle that reads your age
Your birth chart is fixed, but one old Hellenistic technique turns it into a clock. Annual profections move a spotlight one house further around your chart every birthday, naming the life area and the planet — your "time lord" — that set the tone of your year. Here is how it works, age by age.

A profection year is a Hellenistic timing technique: starting from your 1st house at birth, the "active" house advances one step each birthday, cycling every 12 years, so your profected house equals (your age mod 12) plus 1. The sign on that house and its ruling planet become your "time lord" for that year.

The Big Three: three layers of you
Sun, Moon and rising sign are where every chart reading starts.
What is a profection year?
A profection year is a timing technique from Hellenistic astrology that turns your fixed birth chart into a slow-moving clock. The idea is elegant: at birth you begin in your 1st house — your rising sign, your body, your sense of self. Then, on each birthday, the "active" part of your chart advances one whole house. One year in the 2nd house, the next in the 3rd, and so on around the wheel. After twelve birthdays you have circled all twelve houses and land back in the 1st, where the cycle begins again.
So profections don't predict events. They tell you which room of your chart the year is happening in — and hand you a single planet, the time lord, to watch. It's a pattern, not a prophecy.
How do annual profections work?
The maths is refreshingly simple. Your profected house for any year is:
(your age mod 12) + 1
In plain terms: take your age, keep subtracting 12 until you land somewhere between 0 and 11, then add one. Age 0, 12, 24, 36 and 48 all return you to the 1st house. Age 1, 13 and 25 activate the 2nd house. Age 6, 18, 30 and 42 light up the 7th house of partnership. Age 9, 21, 33 and 45 move you into the 10th house of career. Because the clock is tied to your birthday, your profection year flips on your birthday — not on January 1 — and it depends entirely on your rising sign, which sets the sign on your 1st house and therefore every house after it.
Here is the full cycle, age by age.
Profection years by age (ages 0–11, repeating every 12 years)
| Age (and +12 each cycle) | Profected house | Life area in focus |
|---|---|---|
| 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 | 1st house | The self, body and identity — a fresh start |
| 1, 13, 25, 37, 49, 61 | 2nd house | Money, values and resources |
| 2, 14, 26, 38, 50, 62 | 3rd house | Mind, siblings and local life |
| 3, 15, 27, 39, 51, 63 | 4th house | Home, family and roots |
| 4, 16, 28, 40, 52, 64 | 5th house | Romance, children and creativity |
| 5, 17, 29, 41, 53, 65 | 6th house | Work, health and daily routine |
| 6, 18, 30, 42, 54, 66 | 7th house | Partnership and contracts |
| 7, 19, 31, 43, 55, 67 | 8th house | Intimacy, crisis and shared resources |
| 8, 20, 32, 44, 56, 68 | 9th house | Travel, study and belief |
| 9, 21, 33, 45, 57, 69 | 10th house | Career and public life |
| 10, 22, 34, 46, 58, 70 | 11th house | Friends, groups and hopes |
| 11, 23, 35, 47, 59, 71 | 12th house | Retreat, the hidden and the unconscious — rest |
Your profected house = (your age mod 12) + 1. The same house returns every 12 years, so each birthday simply moves the spotlight one step around your chart.
Your time lord: the ruler of the year
Here is where profections earn their keep. Once you know the profected house, you look at the sign sitting on that house in your own chart and find that sign's ruling planet. That planet becomes your time lord (sometimes called the lord of the year) — the single most important body in your chart for the next twelve months.
The traditional rulers are fixed: Aries and Scorpio answer to Mars; Taurus and Libra to Venus; Gemini and Virgo to Mercury; Cancer to the Moon; Leo to the Sun; Sagittarius and Pisces to Jupiter; and Capricorn and Aquarius to Saturn. Wherever that planet sits in your natal chart — and, crucially, whatever transits it receives this year — describes the year's theme. A Venus time lord brushed by a warm Jupiter transit reads very differently from a Saturn time lord under pressure.
That is the part a calculator can't finish for you, because it depends on the live sky. Watching this year's transits land on your time lord is exactly what AstraLink's Cosmic Simulator is built to show — your profected planet lit up against the moving sky — and the AI Advisor can talk you through what a given contact is actually asking of you. A lens, not a verdict.
What each profection year tends to emphasize
Some years in the cycle stand out:
- 1st-house year (ages 0, 12, 24, 36, 48): a reset of identity, body and direction. New look, new name on the door, a year that feels like you again. Your time lord is your own chart ruler.
- 7th-house year (ages 6, 18, 30, 42): relationships, partnership and contracts move centre stage — the classic "something shifts with the people closest to me" year. See the 7th house for what it covers (partners of any gender, business and legal ties included).
- 10th-house year (ages 9, 21, 33, 45): career and public life — visibility, reputation, a step up or a pivot.
- 12th-house year (ages 11, 23, 35, 47): the quiet one — rest, retreat, closing chapters and inner work before the wheel turns back to a fresh 1st-house year. Not a bad year; a behind-the-scenes one.
Profections pair naturally with other Hellenistic timing methods like zodiacal releasing, and with the slower life-cycle markers such as your Jupiter return and other planetary returns. Frequently asked questions
What is a profection year in astrology?
A profection year is a Hellenistic timing technique that advances an 'active' house around your birth chart by one step each birthday. At age 0 you begin in the 1st house, and your profected house equals your age mod 12, plus one. The sign on that house and its ruling planet — your time lord — flag the life area and the single planet that colour the year ahead. It describes emphasis, not fixed events.
How do I calculate my profection year?
Take your current age and subtract 12 repeatedly until the number sits between 0 and 11, then add one — that is your profected house. For example, age 30 gives 30 mod 12 = 6, plus one = the 7th house of partnership. The year flips on your birthday, not January 1. To find your time lord, look at the sign on that house in your own chart and use its traditional ruling planet. The calculator above does both at once.
What is a time lord or lord of the year?
Your time lord — also called the lord of the year — is the planet that rules the sign sitting on your profected house for the current year. It becomes the most important planet in your chart for those twelve months. Where it sits natally, and especially the transits it receives this year, describe the year's theme. A supported time lord tends to feel easier; a stressed one asks more of you. It is guidance to work with, not a verdict to obey.
What does a 12th-house profection year mean?
A 12th-house profection year — which falls at ages 11, 23, 35, 47 and 59 — is the quiet, inward chapter just before the cycle restarts in your 1st house. It traditionally favours rest, retreat, closure and behind-the-scenes work rather than big public launches. If Sagittarius or Pisces sits on your 12th house, Jupiter is your time lord; if Capricorn or Aquarius does, it is Saturn. It is not an unlucky year — think of it as composting, so the fresh 1st-house year has something to grow.
Is a profection year the same as a solar return?
No. A solar return is a full chart cast each birthday for the exact moment the Sun returns to its natal degree. A profection year is a simpler symbolic count that just advances one house per birthday and names a single time lord. Many astrologers read them together: profections point to the house and planet that matter most, while the solar return and live transits fill in the timing and detail. One is a chart, the other is a pointer.
