Lilith in astrology (Black Moon Lilith): meaning, by sign, and in relationships
Lilith is the placement that makes people sit up in a chart reading. It describes the part of you that refuses: the desire you will not apologise for, the situation you walked out of, the power you took back after being shamed. Here is what Black Moon Lilith actually is astronomically, how to find yours, what each sign does with it, and why it runs so hot in synastry.
Lilith in astrology usually means Black Moon Lilith: not a body but the lunar apogee, the point in the Moon's orbit farthest from Earth. It moves through a sign in about nine months and, in a birth chart, shows raw desire, refusal and the part of you that will not be tamed, shamed or negotiated away.

What is Lilith in astrology?
When astrologers say Lilith, they almost always mean Black Moon Lilith, and Black Moon Lilith is not a thing you could point a telescope at. It is a point: the lunar apogee, the place in the Moon's elliptical orbit where the Moon is farthest from Earth. Because the Moon's orbit itself slowly rotates, that far point drifts through the zodiac at about 40° a year, spending roughly nine months in each sign and completing a full circuit in a little under nine years.
There are two ways to calculate it, and charts label them differently. Mean Black Moon Lilith smooths the orbit into a steady average and is the one most calculators (including ours) use by default. True (osculating) Black Moon Lilith follows the orbit's actual wobble and can swing several degrees, occasionally into a neighbouring sign. If your Lilith sign differs between two apps, that is why. Three other Liliths exist and cause confusion: asteroid Lilith (1181), a real rock in the main belt; Dark Moon Lilith, a hypothetical second moon proposed in 1898 and never confirmed; and the fixed star Algol, which some writers nickname Lilith. The name is mythological. In medieval Jewish folklore Lilith was Adam's first partner, made from the same earth, who refused to be beneath him and left Eden rather than submit. Earlier Mesopotamian texts describe lilītu spirits of the night wind. Astrologers took the refusal, not the demon. Black Moon Lilith in a chart marks where you will not compromise, where you were once shamed for wanting, and where you reclaim that wanting as power. It is instinct without apology, and it is the exile: the part of you that would rather leave than shrink.
How to find Lilith in your chart
Most modern calculators include Black Moon Lilith; the free birth chart on this site does, and the AI reading in the app lists it with Chiron and the nodes. Look for the glyph of a black crescent on a small cross (⚸). Your birth date alone fixes the sign in almost every case; the house needs your birth time and place. Note the sign, the house, and any aspect within 3° to a personal planet or angle. Then check whether Lilith is mean or true in the settings if the sign looks wrong.
Lilith also transits. Because it moves about 3° a month, a transit over your Venus or Ascendant lasts a couple of months and tends to coincide with a season of saying no. The Cosmic Simulator flags these hits alongside the planetary ones.

Black Moon Lilith is the synastry point that explains attractions that make no sense on paper. Your Lilith conjunct their Venus, Mars, Sun or Moon (within about 3°) tends to produce fascination, taboo energy and a pull that feels bigger than the two of you. Their Lilith on your Ascendant or Descendant and they show you a version of yourself you have kept hidden. These contacts are electric and they are also power-sensitive: the Lilith person can feel like the disruptor, and the planet person like the one being pulled off course. - "Lilith placements are bad news in a partner." They are intense, not malign. A partner with Lilith on your Venus is someone you will never find boring.
