What is the IC in astrology?

The IC stands for Imum Coeli, Latin for "bottom of the sky". It is the point where the ecliptic crosses the meridian below the horizon at your time and place of birth, which makes it the exact opposite of the Midheaven. In quadrant house systems such as Placidus, the IC is the cusp of the 4th house. You will sometimes see it called the nadir, which is close enough for conversation but not strictly correct: the astronomical nadir is the point directly beneath your feet, while the IC is where the zodiac meets the meridian underneath you.

Interpretively, the IC is the root of the chart. If the Midheaven is where you are seen, the IC is where you are from: family, ancestry, the house you grew up in, the emotional atmosphere of early childhood, and the parent who shaped your sense of home. It describes what "home" has to feel like for you to relax, the private self behind the public one, and, in traditional astrology, the end of matters and the last chapter of life. The IC is one of the four angles with the Ascendant, Descendant and Midheaven, so it is one of the most personal, time-sensitive points you have.

Because the IC and MC are a single axis, they always share a modality and fall in opposite signs: a Capricorn Midheaven means a Cancer IC, a Leo Midheaven means an Aquarius IC. That is not a coincidence to interpret away; it is the chart saying that what you build in public rests on what you were given in private.

How to find the IC in your chart

You need your birth time and place, not just the date. The IC moves through the whole zodiac every 24 hours, roughly a degree every four minutes, so "born in the afternoon" is not enough to fix the sign. • "IC means your mother." It means the parent (or figure) who shaped home for you. Which parent that is varies, and the chart does not assign a gender.
• "IC and nadir are identical." They are close but not the same point; the IC is on the meridian, the nadir is straight down.
• "You can read the IC from a noon chart." Without a birth time the IC is a guess, and the sign can be a full sign out.
