What is an interception in astrology?

An interception happens when an entire zodiac sign sits inside a single house without touching either of that house's boundaries. Normally each house begins on a cusp that falls in a particular sign, and the signs and cusps roughly keep pace around the wheel. But in the house systems that carve the chart into unequal slices, a house can grow wide enough to swallow a whole sign — the sign has no cusp of its own, so it is "intercepted", enclosed like a room with no doorway onto the corridor.

Interceptions always come in pairs. Because opposite houses mirror each other across the chart, if a sign is intercepted in one house, its opposite sign is intercepted in the opposite house. So you never have just one: at minimum two signs are intercepted, and two other signs get duplicated, each appearing on two consecutive house cusps to make up the difference. A duplicated sign's themes are stretched across two houses; an intercepted sign's themes are hidden inside one.

Why interceptions happen (and which house systems have them)

Interception is a side effect of how you measure the houses, not of the planets. Quadrant systems such as Placidus, Koch and Regiomontanus divide the sky by time or by great circles, which makes houses unequal — some wide, some narrow — especially the further you are born from the equator. The higher the latitude, the more the house sizes distort, and the more likely a wide house is to intercept a sign. Someone born in Alaska or northern Europe is far more likely to have interceptions than someone born near the equator, where the houses stay close to even.

Crucially, some systems have no interceptions at all. In whole-sign houses, each house is one whole sign, so nothing can be enclosed; equal houses space the cusps 30° apart for the same result. This is why an intercepted sign can appear in your Placidus chart and vanish in your whole-sign chart — the energy has not changed, only the lens. What an intercepted sign or planet means

The classic reading is blocked, delayed or late-blooming energy. An intercepted sign's qualities are fully present in you, but they lack an obvious "cusp" to come out through, so they can feel hard to reach, hidden, or slow to develop. Often the sign's themes come online later in life, once you have done the conscious work to draw them out — a resource you grow into rather than one handed to you at the start.

A planet inside an intercepted sign is an intercepted planet, and it feels this most sharply. Its expression can seem stifled, internalised or "trapped" in youth — you feel the planet strongly on the inside but struggle to show it — and it tends to mature into one of your real strengths once you stop waiting for permission and build the outlet yourself. The house still works normally through its cusp sign; the intercepted sign is an extra layer folded inside, adding depth that has to be unlocked.

None of this is a life sentence. Read an interception as a development brief, not a wall: the sign or planet is not denied to you, it is waiting to be consciously claimed.
