Astrology Reading With a Human Astrologer: What to Expect, How to Prepare, What to Ask

What is an astrology reading?

An astrology reading is a conversation between you and an astrologer about a chart. In a birth chart reading (also called a natal chart reading) the chart is yours: the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets and houses at the minute you were born, read as a map of temperament, patterns and timing. In a synastry reading there are two charts, yours and a partner's, and the astrologer looks at how they interact. In a timing reading the chart is still yours, but the question is about a period: what the current transits, progressions or returns are asking of you this year.

A good reading is not a performance of accuracy. It is a structured way of thinking about your life with someone who speaks a precise symbolic language and has seen hundreds of charts. You should leave with two or three things you did not have when you arrived: a name for a pattern, a sense of timing, or a decision that feels clearer.

What to expect in a reading with an AstraLink astrologer

Before the session. You book in the app and share your exact birth data (date, time, place) plus two or three questions. The astrologer receives your chart and your AI birth chart report in advance, so the first ten minutes are not spent on "you are a Virgo". For a synastry reading you add the other person's data with their knowledge.

The session. Consultations run 45 to 60 minutes by video call, or as a written reading if you prefer to read rather than talk. The astrologer opens with the shape of the chart (chart ruler, key aspects, the current big transits), then moves to your questions. Expect them to ask you things: astrology is interpretive, and a Saturn transit to the 7th house means something different to someone newly married than to someone newly single.

After the session. You receive a written summary with the placements and dates discussed, so you can check them in the Cosmic Simulator and revisit them when the transit arrives. Sessions are private; nothing from a consultation is used to train models or shared with anyone.

Natal vs synastry vs timing readings: which one do you need?

• Natal reading for "Why do I keep doing this?", "What am I actually good at?" or "Who am I when I am not performing?". The astrologer reads the Sun, Moon, rising, chart ruler, strongest aspects, nodes and houses: the whole birth chart.
• Synastry reading for "Are we compatible?", "Why does this person get under my skin?" or "Can this work long term?". The astrologer reads Venus, Mars and Moon contacts, Saturn aspects, house overlays and the composite chart; see our synastry guide.
• Timing reading for "Is this the year to change jobs?", "When will this hard patch end?" or "Should I move in 2027?". The astrologer reads Saturn, Jupiter and outer-planet transits, the progressed Moon, your solar return and eclipses on your angles.

Most first readings should be natal. Synastry and timing readings assume you already know your own chart; without that, the astrologer spends half the session on the foundation. If you are undecided, the natal reading with one timing question and one relationship question is the classic format.

How to prepare for a birth chart reading

1. Confirm your birth time. The minute matters: it sets your rising sign and every house. Check your birth certificate, hospital record or a parent's memory. If it is unknown, say so; a skilled astrologer can work with a date-only chart or attempt a rectification, but they need to know.
2. Read your own report first. Skim the AI reading so the vocabulary is familiar. You do not need to understand it; you need to recognise it when the astrologer says "your Moon–Mars trine".
3. Write down three questions, in order of importance. The first one will get the most time. Make them about you and your choices, not about predicting other people.
4. Bring dates. When did the last big thing happen: the move, the breakup, the promotion? Astrologers use past events to calibrate how your chart responds to transits.
5. Decide what you want to leave with. A decision, a reframe, a timeline. Tell the astrologer at the start; it changes how they read.
6. Be somewhere private. You will end up talking about things you did not plan to.

Questions to ask an astrologer

Good questions are open, about you, and answerable from a chart. Here are the ones that consistently produce useful readings.

About your natal chart

• What is the central tension in my chart, and how does it show up at its best?
• Which planet is my chart ruler, and what does its placement say about how I move through the world?
• What do my strongest aspects say about the patterns I repeat?
• What do my North and South Node suggest about where growth is for me?
• What talents in my chart am I underusing?

About relationships

• What does my Venus and 7th house say about what I need from a partner, as opposed to what I am attracted to?
• In our synastry, where is the ease and where is the friction, and is the friction the productive kind?
• What does my chart say about how I handle conflict, and what does theirs say?

About timing

• Which transits are shaping this year, and what are they asking of me?
• When is my next Saturn return or Saturn square, and what should I be building before then?
• Is there a better window in the next six months for a launch, a move or a hard conversation?

About work and money

• What do my Midheaven and 10th house say about the kind of recognition that will satisfy me?
• How does my chart describe my relationship with money, and what pattern should I watch?

Questions an ethical astrologer will not answer

An astrologer who follows a code of conduct will decline, gently, to tell you whether you are ill, whether to take a medication, whether a contract is legally sound, whether to buy a stock, when someone will die, or what a third party is secretly thinking. They will also not read the chart of someone who has not consented, beyond the public-figure exception. This is not evasiveness; it is the line between reflection and harm. If you ask something in that territory, expect a redirect: "I cannot tell you if you are sick, but I can tell you your 6th house is being activated, which is often when people finally book the check-up they have been putting off."
