What zodiac sign is September?

September belongs to two signs. The Sun is in Virgo from the end of August until the September equinox, and in Libra from the equinox to late October. For September that works out as:

• September 1–22: Virgo (mutable earth, ruled by Mercury)
• September 23–30: Libra (cardinal air, ruled by Venus)

The boundary is the equinox itself, the moment the Sun reaches 0° Libra. It lands on September 22 or 23 depending on the year and your time zone: in 2024 and 2025 it fell on the 22nd (UTC), in 2026 it falls at 00:05 UTC on the 23rd, which is still the evening of the 22nd across the US. September Virgo (September 1–22)

September Virgos are the bulk of the sign, and they include all three of its decans. Early September (roughly the 2nd to the 12th) is the second decan, associated in the decan system with Saturn and a Capricorn sub-influence: disciplined, ambitious, a little stern with themselves. Mid-to-late September (the 13th to the 22nd) is the third decan, with a Venus and Taurus sub-influence: warmer, more sensual, more attached to comfort and beauty, and still exacting. September Libra (September 23–30)

The last week of September is early Libra, the first decan of the sign, ruled by Venus with no sub-influence to dilute it. These are the most Libra Libras: charming, fair-minded, allergic to unnecessary conflict, and drawn to beauty in people, places and ideas. As a cardinal sign, Libra initiates; as an air sign, it initiates through relationships and conversation.
