Demi Lovato's zodiac sign and birth chart: Leo Sun, Taurus Moon, Leo rising

What is Demi Lovato's zodiac sign?

The answer is Leo. Demi Lovato, the singer and actor, was born on August 20, 1992, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The date falls in the last days of Leo season, and the Sun was still in Leo for all of it.

Leo is the fixed fire sign and the only one ruled by the Sun. Astrological tradition links it with self-expression, courage, generosity and a big, warm presence. It is often called the performer of the zodiac. The flip side, as astrologers tell it, is pride and a real need for appreciation. Those are themes of the sign, and a sign is a broad category shared by everyone born in the same month-long window.

Moon sign

The Moon sign is Taurus. The Moon was in Taurus for the whole of August 20, 1992, so a Taurus Moon holds whatever the time of birth that day.

The Moon in a chart describes emotional needs: what feels safe and what restores a person. Traditional astrology calls the Moon exalted in Taurus, one of its most comfortable positions. A Taurus Moon is associated with steadiness, a love of routine and physical comfort, and feelings that change slowly. Leo and Taurus are both fixed signs, and astrologers read that pairing as persistent and hard to push off course.

Venus and Mars

Venus and Mars were each in a single sign for the entire birth day, so these placements do not depend on the birth time.

Venus is in Virgo. Venus describes the approach to love and pleasure, and in Virgo it is associated with care shown in practical ways: noticing details, helping, getting things right. Astrologers describe it as discerning and modest in style, quite different from Leo's love of the grand gesture.

Mars is in Gemini. Mars is the planet of drive, and in Gemini that drive is read as mental and verbal: quick, curious, good at juggling several things at once, and inclined to argue a point with words. The traditional caution is energy spread across too many directions.

Rising sign

On the recorded birth time, the rising sign is Leo. Astro-Databank, the archive astrologers use for birth data, lists 6:25 am with a Rodden rating of A. An A rating means the time was quoted from memory by the person or their family. Astrologers treat it as reliable, one step below AA, the grade reserved for a birth certificate or birth record.

That caveat matters because the Ascendant changes sign about every two hours, so the rising sign stands or falls with the time. If the 6:25 am time is right, the Sun and the Ascendant are both in Leo, which is what you would expect from a birth around sunrise. The rising sign describes the first impression a person makes, and Leo rising is read as warm, expressive and hard to miss. Astrologers call a chart with the Sun and Ascendant in one sign a double, so this is a double Leo on the record we have.
