Katy Perry's zodiac sign and birth chart: Scorpio Sun, Scorpio Moon, Scorpio rising

What is Katy Perry's zodiac sign?

Katy Perry is a Scorpio. The pop singer and songwriter was born on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California, a couple of days into Scorpio season.

Scorpio is the fixed water sign, ruled by Mars in traditional astrology and by Pluto in the modern system. It is associated with intensity, privacy, emotional depth and a refusal to do things by halves. Astrologers describe Scorpio as the sign that wants the truth under the surface, and as one that guards its own inner life closely. Its classic strengths are focus and staying power. Its classic challenge is letting go.

Moon sign

Her Moon is in Scorpio as well. The Moon was in that sign for all of October 25, 1984, so a Scorpio Moon holds whatever the time of birth that day.

In astrology the Moon stands for emotional needs and instinctive reactions. A Scorpio Moon is read as feeling things deeply and privately, prizing loyalty, and preferring one real bond to a dozen casual ones. When the Sun and the Moon share a sign, astrologers say the outer identity and the inner needs speak the same language, which concentrates that sign's themes in the chart.

Venus and Mars

Both planets move slowly enough to keep their signs for the whole birth day, and both step outside Scorpio.

Her Venus is in Sagittarius. Venus is the planet of love and pleasure, and in Sagittarius tradition gives it an appetite for freedom, honesty and humour. Astrologers read it as love treated like an adventure, drawn to people who make the world feel bigger.

Her Mars is in Capricorn. Traditional astrology calls Mars exalted here, meaning the planet of drive is thought to work especially well in this sign. Mars in Capricorn is associated with discipline, strategy and patience: ambition that plays a long game and does not mind the climb.

After so much water, a fire Venus and an earth Mars are the placements astrologers would point to for lightness and structure.

Rising sign

On the recorded birth time, her rising sign is Scorpio too. Astro-Databank, the archive astrologers use for birth data, lists 7:58 am with a Rodden rating of AA. That is the top grade on the scale, used when the time comes from a birth certificate or birth record.

The rising sign, or Ascendant, describes the first impression and the way a person meets the world. Scorpio rising is read as reserved, watchful and hard to decode at first glance. One caveat belongs here: a rising sign is only as good as the time behind it, because the Ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours. With an AA time, this one stands on the firmest footing available.

Mercury, the planet of thought and speech, was in Scorpio that day as well. Sun, Moon, Mercury and Ascendant in a single sign is what astrologers mean when they call a chart Scorpio-heavy.

Is Katy Perry into astrology?

Yes, by her own account. In a 2014 GQ cover interview, as reported by CBS News, she said she believes in a lot of astrology.

That is a plain statement of belief and it is the whole of our record. It does not say which parts of astrology she meant or how she uses it, and we are not going to fill in the gaps for her.
