Pluto retrograde 2031: the dates
- May 14 – October 24, 2031 (163 days). Pluto stations retrograde on May 14, 2031 at about 20:30 UTC, at 13°39′ Aquarius. Pluto stations direct on October 24, 2031 at about 23:30 UTC, at 11°16′ Aquarius.
Pluto is retrograde once a year, for about five and a half months. Compared with the previous retrograde (May 12 – Oct 23, 2030), this one begins about 2° further along the zodiac, still in Aquarius.
Times are UTC. Nothing reverses in space: retrograde motion is the apparent backward drift a planet shows when Earth overtakes it (or, for Mercury and Venus, when the planet overtakes Earth).
Pluto retrograde May 14 – Oct 24, 2031: key dates
| Date (UTC) | What happens |
|---|---|
| Jan 19, 2031 | Pre-retrograde shadow begins: Pluto first crosses 11°16′ Aquarius, the degree where it will later turn direct |
| May 14, 2031, about 20:30 UTC | Pluto stations retrograde at 13°39′ Aquarius |
| Aug 5, 2031 | Opposition: Pluto is opposite the Sun at 12° Aquarius, closest to Earth and visible all night; the midpoint of the retrograde |

| Feb 16, 2032 | Post-retrograde shadow ends: Pluto passes 13°39′ Aquarius again and covers new ground |
Computed from NASA JPL Horizons. A station in the first hours of a UTC day falls on the previous evening in the Americas. Pluto is almost motionless around a station, so the time is given to the nearest 30 minutes; the date is firm.
What else is retrograde at the same time
Retrogrades overlap, and astrologers read them together. These planets are also retrograde during at least part of each period:
- May 14 – Oct 24, 2031: Mercury (Jul 29 – Aug 22, 2031), Venus (Jul 20 – Sep 1, 2031), Mars (Mar 29 – Jun 13, 2031), Jupiter (Apr 15 – Aug 16, 2031), Saturn (Oct 5, 2031 – Feb 16, 2032), Uranus (Oct 3, 2031 – Mar 1, 2032), Neptune (Jul 19 – Dec 24, 2031).
The whole year is on the retrograde calendar 2031.
What Pluto retrograde means in 2031
In astrology Pluto stands for power, control, endings and deep change. Pluto retrograde is read as slow inner clearing: you look at where you hold on too tightly, where power is uneven, and what has to end before something better can grow. In Aquarius the subject is groups, networks, technology and the balance between freedom and control.
Who notices it most. For May 14 – Oct 24, 2031 astrologers look first at people with the Sun, Moon, rising sign or personal planets between 11° and 13° of Aquarius, and at the same degrees of Taurus, Leo and Scorpio. Everyone else can read it through the house it falls in, below.
What to do
Look honestly at a power struggle and your part in it, and let one thing go on purpose. Avoid forcing a showdown; the point is to change your side of the pattern. The longer guide, with the astronomy and the reading of a natal Pluto retrograde, is on the Pluto retrograde page.
Pluto retrograde May 14 – Oct 24, 2031 for each sign
Read your rising sign first if you know it, since it sets the houses; then your Sun sign. Houses are counted from your sign in whole-sign style. The birthdays show whose Sun the retrograde touches directly: Pluto covers 11° Aquarius to 13° Aquarius, and the Sun moves about one degree a day, so the dates are approximate.
Aries: 11th house
Area of life: friends, groups and long-term hopes. Groups and friendships change deeply: influence, loyalty and the future you are working for. What to do: leave a circle that runs on pressure, and commit to a cause that matters to you.
Easier for Aries born around March 31 – April 3 (Sun at 11°–13°): Pluto sextiles your Sun.
Taurus: 10th house
Area of life: career, reputation and public role. Ambition, status and authority: what you sacrifice for position, and conflict with those in power. What to do: reconsider what success costs you, and step back from a power struggle you cannot win.
Strongest for Taurus born around May 1–4 (Sun at 11°–13°): Pluto squares your Sun.
Gemini: 9th house
Area of life: travel, study, beliefs and publishing. A belief system falls apart and a truer one forms, with a strong urge to study or travel for meaning. What to do: give up the dogma, and study what truly changes you.
Easier for Gemini born around June 1–4 (Sun at 11°–13°): Pluto trines your Sun.
Cancer: 8th house
Area of life: shared money, debts, intimacy and trust. Shared money, debt, intimacy and loss: the deepest ties and what they cost. What to do: deal with debts and joint assets honestly, and let yourself finish grieving.
Pluto makes no major angle to a Cancer Sun this time, so the house carries the reading.
Leo: 7th house
Area of life: partnerships, marriage and one-to-one relationships. Power imbalances in a close relationship; a partnership that must change or end. What to do: name the control game, your side of it included, and rebuild the relationship on equal terms.
Strongest for Leo born around August 2–6 (Sun at 11°–13°): Pluto is opposite your Sun.
Virgo: 6th house
Area of life: daily work, routines and health habits. A job or a habit that has run its course, or a compulsion about work and control of the body. What to do: drop one draining habit completely, and change how you work before it wears you out.
Pluto makes no major angle to a Virgo Sun this time, so the house carries the reading.
Libra: 5th house
Area of life: romance, creativity, children and fun. Intense attachments, jealousy, and creative work that asks for everything. What to do: loosen your grip on a lover or a child, and put the intensity into something you make.
Easier for Libra born around October 4–7 (Sun at 11°–13°): Pluto trines your Sun.
Scorpio: 4th house
Area of life: home, family, roots and where you live. Family patterns, old wounds and who holds power at home. What to do: look at what you inherited emotionally and decide what ends with you; clear out the house.
Strongest for Scorpio born around November 3–6 (Sun at 11°–13°): Pluto squares your Sun.
Sagittarius: 3rd house
Area of life: communication, learning, siblings and short trips. The way you think and speak changes: obsessive thoughts, hard truths in conversation. What to do: say the true thing without using it as a weapon, and let a fixed idea go.
Easier for Sagittarius born around December 3–6 (Sun at 11°–13°): Pluto sextiles your Sun.
Capricorn: 2nd house
Area of life: money, income, possessions and self-worth. Your relationship with money, possessions and self-worth is being taken apart and rebuilt. What to do: face a fear about scarcity, let go of things you hoard, and separate your worth from your income.
Pluto makes no major angle to a Capricorn Sun this time, so the house carries the reading.
Aquarius: 1st house
Area of life: your body, identity and how you come across. A deep change in who you are, and in how much control you need over your image. What to do: let an old version of yourself go, and notice where you try to control how others see you.
Strongest for Aquarius born around January 31 – February 3 (Sun at 11°–13°): Pluto retrogrades over your Sun.
Pisces: 12th house
Area of life: rest, solitude, endings and what you keep private. What has been buried: old fears, secrets and self-sabotage coming to the surface. What to do: bring it into the open with someone you trust, in therapy or a similar setting, and forgive what you can.
Pluto makes no major angle to a Pisces Sun this time, so the house carries the reading.
