Stellium in astrology: meaning, by sign and house, and how to handle the intensity

What is a stellium in astrology?

The word comes from the Latin for star cluster. In a birth chart, a stellium is three or more planets gathered in the same sign or the same house. Because the planets are close together they usually form a chain of conjunctions, and because they share a sign or house they all speak with the same accent. The result is a chart with an obvious centre of gravity.

Astrologers disagree on the count. The generous rule is three or more planets; the strict rule is four or more, or three if one of them is the Sun or Moon. Most also agree that the Sun, Moon and the eight planets count, while the nodes, Chiron, Lilith and asteroids do not (they can join a stellium but cannot create one). A stellium is a pattern, not an aspect. It sits alongside the T-square, the grand trine and the yod in the family of chart shapes that describe the overall structure of a personality rather than one relationship between two planets.

What does a stellium mean?

Think of the ten planets as ten voices in a meeting. Normally they are spread across the room and the conversation is balanced. A stellium seats four of them at the same table, and that table dominates. The person becomes unusually focused, unusually intense and unusually one-sided about the sign or house involved.

Three things follow.

1. Dominance. The stellium's sign often overrides the Sun sign in how the person comes across. A Cancer Sun with Mercury, Venus and Mars in Leo reads as a Leo.
2. Blind spots. The rest of the chart is sparse, so the qualities of the empty signs and houses are underdeveloped. A 10th-house stellium can leave the 4th house of home neglected.
3. A single dispositor with outsized power. Every planet in the stellium answers to the ruler of that sign, which makes that ruler the key to the whole chart. Because the planets inside a stellium are conjunct each other, they also blend. Sun-Mercury-Venus in the same sign is a person whose identity, thinking and affection are one thing. That is powerful and, in a relationship, occasionally overwhelming for a partner who was expecting three separate people to negotiate with.

Stellium by sign

The sign tells you the style the stellium imposes on everything. Short readings; combine with the element and modality of the sign.

• Aries stellium: initiative concentrated; leads, starts, competes; must learn to finish and to wait.
• Taurus stellium: stability concentrated; builds, owns, enjoys; must learn to let go and change.
• Gemini stellium: curiosity concentrated; talks, learns, scatters; must learn depth and silence.
• Cancer stellium: care concentrated; nurtures, remembers, retreats; must learn boundaries.
• Leo stellium: expression concentrated; creates, performs, gives; must learn to share the stage.
• Virgo stellium: precision concentrated; improves, serves, worries; must learn to accept good enough.
• Libra stellium: relationship concentrated; partners, mediates, pleases; must learn to choose alone.
• Scorpio stellium: intensity concentrated; probes, bonds, controls; must learn to trust and release.
• Sagittarius stellium: meaning concentrated; explores, teaches, overpromises; must learn detail.
• Capricorn stellium: ambition concentrated; builds, endures, achieves; must learn to rest and feel.
• Aquarius stellium: independence concentrated; invents, reforms, detaches; must learn intimacy.
• Pisces stellium: imagination concentrated; dreams, empathises, dissolves; must learn structure.

Stellium by house

The house tells you the arena that absorbs most of the person's life. This is often more descriptive than the sign, because it says what they actually spend their time on.

• 1st house: a strong, unmistakable presence; identity is the project.
• 2nd house: money, resources and self-worth dominate; a builder of security.
• 3rd house: communication, learning, siblings, local life; a writer, teacher or connector.
• 4th house: home, family, roots; life organised around a private base.
• 5th house: creativity, romance, children, performance; life as self-expression.
• 6th house: work, craft, routine, health; a life of service and skill.

• 9th house: travel, study, belief; a seeker or a scholar.
• 10th house: career and public role absorb everything; visibility is the theme.
• 11th house: friends, groups, causes; a community builder or activist.
• 12th house: the inner world, solitude, service behind the scenes; a mystic, a helper, a recluse.

A stellium in an angular house (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) is louder than one in a cadent house (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th). A stellium that straddles two houses is read in both, weighted toward the house holding the Sun or Moon.

Examples of stelliums

Stelliums form whenever the fast planets bunch around the Sun, so certain birth windows produce them for everyone born then.

• Early May 2000: the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn were all in Taurus around May 3 to 4, 2000, one of the largest stelliums in living memory. People born that week carry a seven-planet Taurus signature: stability, sensuality, stubbornness and a strong relationship with money and the physical world.
• January 2020: Sun, Mercury, Saturn, Pluto and Jupiter in Capricorn around the Saturn-Pluto conjunction of January 12, 2020. A generation born under a Capricorn stellium: serious, structural, born into a world being rebuilt.
• February 1962: seven bodies in Aquarius, including a solar eclipse on February 5, a stellium astrologers still cite as the marker of a reform-minded cohort.
• A personal example: Sun, Mercury and Venus in Virgo in the 6th house with Scorpio rising. Identity, thinking and affection all run through work, craft and health; the person is the colleague everyone relies on and the partner who shows love by fixing your problems. How to handle the intensity

A stellium is a gift with a maintenance schedule. Practical guidance from working with these charts:

• Feed the theme on purpose. A 10th-house stellium will make you work; decide what you work on so the stellium does not decide for you.
• Develop the opposite house. The sign and house opposite the stellium are the counterweight. A 1st-house stellium needs to practise the 7th house of partnership; a 6th-house stellium needs the 12th house of rest.
• Respect transits to the stellium. When Saturn or Pluto crosses a four-planet cluster, it hits four planets in a row over two or three years. • Watch the dispositor. The ruler of the stellium's sign is the release valve. Strengthen it and the whole cluster runs better.
• Tell partners. In synastry, a stellium means the other person's planets will aspect several of yours at once. It is a lot. Naming it is kinder than making them discover it.
