Lana Del Rey's zodiac sign and birth chart: a Leo Moon and, on her stated birth time, a Cancer Sun

What is Lana Del Rey's zodiac sign?

On her recorded birth time, Lana Del Rey is a Cancer. The singer-songwriter was born on June 21, 1985, in Manhattan, New York, and that date needs a closer look than most: the Sun changed sign at 6:45 am that day. The birth time on record is 4:47 pm, hours after the change, which places her Sun at the very start of Cancer. A birth before 6:45 am that morning would put the Sun in Gemini, the sign before it. So the Sun sign rests on the time, and the time on record gives Cancer.

Cancer is a cardinal water sign ruled by the Moon. Tradition associates it with memory, home, protectiveness and a strong attachment to the past; its symbol, the crab, carries a hard shell around a soft interior. Astrologers describe Cancer as sentimental, intuitive and fiercely loyal to its own people, with moodiness and retreat as the shadow side.

Moon sign

Her Moon is in Leo, whatever the time of birth that day. The Moon stayed in one sign from midnight to midnight, so this placement does not lean on the clock at all.

Astrologers read a Leo Moon as warm, proud and expressive: an emotional nature that wants to be seen, gives generously and takes being ignored hard. In the tradition, the Moon describes what a person needs in order to feel safe, and in Leo that need is recognition and wholehearted affection. A water Sun with a fire Moon is a pairing astrologers describe as tender at the core and theatrical in how the feeling comes out.

Venus and Mars

Venus is in Taurus and Mars is in Cancer. Both planets move slowly enough to hold their signs for the whole birth day.

Taurus is one of the two signs Venus rules, so astrologers treat Venus in Taurus as the planet at full strength: sensual, loyal, drawn to beauty, comfort and things that last. Mars in Cancer is read as drive that runs through feeling, protective more than confrontational, with energy spent on defending whatever feels like home. On the recorded time Mars shares its sign with the Sun, which in chart reading doubles the emphasis on Cancer themes.

Rising sign

Her rising sign is Scorpio on the 4:47 pm time she gave herself. Astro-Databank, the archive astrologers use for birth data, lists that time with a Rodden rating of A, the grade for a time quoted from memory by the person or family. That grade means the time rests on her own account, so read the rising sign on that basis.

Scorpio rising is associated with a reserved, magnetic first impression: watchful, private, hard to read at a first meeting. In astrological tradition the rising sign describes the style a person leads with. It changes roughly every two hours, which is why it leans so heavily on the birth time.

Is Lana Del Rey into astrology?

Yes, and she has talked about her own chart on camera. In a 2023 Harper's Bazaar video, as reported by People, she said she had long believed she was a Gemini before learning she is a Cancer Sun with a Leo Moon and Scorpio rising.

That account lines up with the data above. A June 21 birthday sits right on the border between the two signs, and the placements she named are the ones her stated birth time produces. It also shows what a full chart adds to a birthday: with the time of day included, the answer can change.
