Mariah Carey's zodiac sign and birth chart: an Aries Sun, and why the rest stays open

What is Mariah Carey's zodiac sign?

Mariah Carey, the singer and songwriter, is an Aries. Her birthday is March 27, and she was born in Huntington, New York. Our record lists the year as 1969, but her birth year is disputed (1969 or 1970). For the Sun sign that makes no difference: the Sun enters Aries around March 20 or 21 every year and stays until about April 19, so a March 27 birthday is an Aries birthday in either year. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, a cardinal fire sign ruled by Mars. Tradition associates it with initiative, courage, directness and a competitive streak, and astrologers call the Sun exalted here. The classic description is a self-starter who would sooner lead than wait. The usual caveat is impatience.

Moon sign

We do not state a Moon sign for Mariah Carey, and the reason is specific: her birth year is disputed (1969 or 1970), and the Moon sign differs between the two. The Moon is the fastest body in a chart. It crosses a whole sign in roughly two and a half days, so the same calendar date a year apart lands it somewhere else entirely. Naming one Moon sign would mean quietly taking a side on her birth year, and the record gives us no basis for that.

The record lists no Mercury, Venus or Mars sign for her either, which is why this page has no Venus and Mars section. Planet positions depend on the year as much as the day. If you want to know what a Moon sign would add to the picture, the Big Three guide explains how the Sun, Moon and rising sign each do a different job.

Rising sign

No rising sign is stated here. Astro-Databank, the archive astrologers use for birth data, lists a birth time of 7:27 am with a Rodden rating of B. On the Rodden scale, B is the grade for a time taken from a biography or similar published account, a step below a birth certificate or birth record. In this case the 7:27 am time comes from a magazine profile. A B-rated time is usable with care, but here it rests on a date whose year is itself in dispute, and a rising sign presented as fact needs firmer ground than that.

If you come across a full chart for her with houses and an Ascendant, it was drawn by choosing one of the two years and accepting the magazine time. That is a reasonable exercise as long as it is labelled as one. The guide to reading a chart with no birth time shows how much can still be said when the data is incomplete.

Is Mariah Carey into astrology?

We found no public statement from Mariah Carey about astrology, her sign or her chart. Fans read the chart anyway, because a birthday is public and an Aries Sun is easy to confirm. What you see on this page is the calendar and the astrological tradition attached to it. It is not a description of her views, and it does not suggest she has any interest in the subject.
