SZA's zodiac sign and birth chart: a Scorpio Sun and a Pisces Moon

What is SZA's zodiac sign?

SZA is a Scorpio. The singer and songwriter was born on November 8, 1989, in St. Louis, Missouri. The Sun was in Scorpio all that day, so the Sun sign is settled by the date alone.

Scorpio is the fixed water sign. Traditional astrology gives it to Mars and modern astrology to Pluto, and both rulers point the same way: intensity, privacy and staying power. The sign is associated with emotional depth, with loyalty that is hard to earn and harder to lose, and with a refusal to settle for the surface version of anything. Astrologers also link Scorpio with transformation, the habit of closing one chapter completely before opening the next.

Moon sign

Her Moon is in Pisces. The Moon did not change sign on November 8, 1989, so this holds whatever the time of birth that day.

The Moon in a chart describes emotional needs and instinctive reactions. Astrologers read a Pisces Moon as porous and imaginative: a Moon that soaks up the mood of a room and often works feelings out through music, images or daydreaming. Set next to a Scorpio Sun it makes a double-water pairing, which the tradition sums up as feeling first and explaining later.

Venus and Mars

Venus is in Capricorn and Mars is in Scorpio. These two move slowly enough to stay in one sign for the whole birth day, so both are solid without a birth time.

Venus in Capricorn is read as serious about love: slow to commit, loyal once it does, and more impressed by consistency than by grand gestures. It is the earthy counterweight in a chart that otherwise leans toward water. Mars in Scorpio is Mars in a sign it traditionally rules, and astrologers treat that as a strong placement: focused, strategic, patient and not inclined to let go of a goal. Mercury is in Scorpio too. That puts the Sun, Mercury and Mars in a single sign, a concentration that moves Scorpio themes to the front of the chart.

Rising sign

On the recorded birth time, SZA's rising sign is Aquarius. Astro-Databank, the archive astrologers use for birth data, lists 12:17 pm with a Rodden rating of A. The Rodden scale grades how well a birth time is documented, and A means the time was quoted from memory by the person or their family. That is one step below AA, which is reserved for a birth certificate or birth record, and it is a grade astrologers generally work with.

The caveat is the usual one for remembered times. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so if the time were off by a wide margin the answer could change. On 12:17 pm it is Aquarius, which the tradition reads as a cool, independent and slightly unconventional first impression.

Is SZA into astrology?

Yes, and the evidence is in her own posts. In 2016 she wrote on X (Twitter) that her Sun is in Scorpio and her Moon is in Pisces. In 2017 she posted a list of her Mars, Sun and Mercury, all in Scorpio. Both posts match the positions calculated for her birth date. Then, in a January 2024 Apple Music segment, she matched her own songs to zodiac signs, as reported by Jezebel.

Knowing your Mars and Mercury signs goes a step past knowing your Sun sign, which is why the fact card on this page lists her as openly into astrology.
